Today some of the Angle Surveys team visited Salts Mill in Saltaire, taking the opportunity to explore one of Yorkshire’s most iconic buildings and view works by David Hockney.

As Chartered Land surveyors, we’re fortunate to spend our careers working with buildings and places that are full of history and tell a story. Salts Mill is a remarkable example of how historic industrial buildings can be preserved, adapted and celebrated for future generations.

Learning later of David Hockney’s passing on our way home made the visit particularly poignant. Born in Bradford, David Hockney became one of Yorkshire’s most influential and internationally recognised artists. His creativity, innovation and unique perspective have inspired generations across the world.

David Hockney’s legacy will undoubtably continue to inspire future generations and the importance of protecting both our built heritage and the cultural legacy that gives these places meaning.

When Point Clouds Lie: What Is the True Wall Thickness?

Laser scanning is an incredibly powerful survey tool, but understanding its limitations is just as important as capturing the data itself.

Glass, particularly double glazing and mirrors, can refract and reflect laser measurements, introducing duplicated geometry, artefacts, noise and positional inaccuracies into the point cloud. When this occurs repeatedly from multiple scan positions and angles, these distortions can build up within the dataset, making the point cloud inaccurate and more difficult to reliably extract final deliverables from.

That is why at Angle Surveys we meticulously review and clean our point cloud data scan-by-scan, removing erroneous reflections and unwanted data to help ensure our survey drawings are produced to the highest possible level of accuracy and reliability.

Scanning is one thing, understanding shadows is another.

Laser scanning is a powerful tool in a surveyor’s toolkit, but it’s not just about using the right equipment, it’s about placing it correctly.

Even something as simple as a small fence can create significant shadowing. In this case, areas behind the fence are obscured, meaning key details such as inspection chambers (ICs), low boundary wall features, ditches or serious level changes could easily be missed when processing the data back at the office.

Scanning itself is quick on site, but the real skill is anticipating where shadows will occur and ensuring you capture the full picture before leaving site.

It’s not just about collecting data… it’s about collecting the right data.

With the Architect based at the other end of the UK, our brief was simple: capture everything needed so their design team could work with complete confidence, without the need for multiple site visits.

The result:

With daffodils in bloom, the Welsh flag flying proudly and the sun shining, it felt like a fitting way to spend the St David’s Day weekend carrying out a measured building survey of this fantastic community building here in North Wales.

We’re pleased to introduce our latest investment, the latest Leica laser scanner, enhancing both productivity and accuracy across our surveying services. Supported through grant funding, we’re extremely grateful to Conwy Council for their support throughout the whole process. Diolch yn fawr!

As a thank you to the wider North Wales community, we were proud to be carrying out this survey free of charge as our way of giving back.

This represents a further step in Angle Surveys’ strategic investment in advanced geospatial technology and digital surveying capability.

Laser scanning is just the start...

Then comes meticulously registering, cleaning, transforming and quality checking the data set, and only then carefully analysing it to extract accurate information.

Clear drawings...
Accurate deliverables...
and adding small touches I learned were invaluable when working within an architectural practice.

It’s this level of detail that defines our surveying ethos at Angle Surveys.

Turning millions of points and gigabytes of data into information Architects and Architectural Technologists can actually use.

Last week we had the privilege of carrying out a survey for the wonderful team at Almost Home Dog Rescue in Mold, providing our services at a heavily reduced, charity-supported rate.

Despite the rain, we completed the survey and processed the data the same day to assist with their urgent soakaway design and ongoing improvements to the site.

Spending time with Dave and his daughter, and hearing some of the incredibly sad stories behind the dogs they care for, was both emotional and inspiring. The dedication it takes to run a charity like this cannot be understated.

When we asked Dave where he is going been, he answered;
“Up Moel Famau… trying to raise enough money for the vet bills.”
And off he went in the pouring rain, continuing his half-million step challenge!

They are currently overwhelmed with dogs from abuse cases, post-COVID rehoming, abandonment and many other difficult situations.

As dog owners ourselves, it was emotional to hear what happens to some dogs, so we’re proud to sponsor Dave on his mammoth challenge and give a small shout out to the incredible work the whole team does every day at Almost Home Dog Rescue. https://almosthome.dog/

This year, instead of sending Christmas cards, Angle Surveys has decided to give token donations towards 12 charities instead, one for each month of the year.

Although only small donations, the intention here is appreciation, charity exposure and to shine a light on the amazing work these charities do.

The charities supported by Angle Surveys are:

• Tŷ Gobaith
• Macmillan Cancer Support
• British Red Cross
• Age UK
• Shelter
• NSPCC
• RSPCA
• British Heart Foundation
• LionHeart
• British Liver Trust

In surveying terms, one survey point on its own doesn’t make a survey, but enough survey points together helps so many projects. Our intention here is the same.

And just to be clear: these donations aren’t from Angle Surveys alone. They’re made possible by the clients who choose to work with us, so these donations are from everyone who’s worked with us this year

So as Angle Surveys closes its doors for until the 5th Janaury, we would like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and a happy 2026.
