Another Job we have on the go at the Moment is Victoria Bridge in Corwen for Denbighshire County Council. We have two under slung, motorised access cradles designed and installed for us by Apollo cradles, these allow safe access for our lads to undertake concrete repairs to the bridge soffit. There will also be some additional sub surface drainage installed from deck level along with patch repairs to the surfacing and new asphaltic plug joints.

This week marked a huge milestone for the Sappers Bridge project with the successful installation of the bridge deck. The eight deck sections, each weighing between 4.6 and 4.9 tonnes, were assembled on site before being carefully lifted onto a floating NATO pontoon. Each section was then transported beneath its final position and raised into place between the main suspension cables using 90t and 130t cranes positioned on opposite banks of the river. To ensure the bridge remained evenly loaded throughout the process, sections were installed alternately from east to west until both sides met in the centre. One of the most anticipated moments of the entire project was fitting the final centre section. After months of planning, design and construction, we're delighted to report that it slotted perfectly into place, with every bolt hole aligning exactly as intended.
Sappers Bridge is a project of national significance and represents the first true suspension pedestrian bridge to be constructed in the UK for almost a century. This is a fantastic achievement not only for the project team but also for Welsh engineering. This milestone is a testament to the skill, dedication and teamwork shown by everyone involved. We would like to thank Conwy County Borough Council for their vision, support and commitment to delivering this iconic structure, together with our Engineers, supply chain partners and specialist subcontractors who have all played a crucial role in reaching this stage.
The successful installation of the deck demonstrates that we have the expertise, innovation and engineering capability here in Wales to deliver some of the most challenging and complex infrastructure projects.
This achievement feels particularly special as 2026 marks 25 years since MWT Civil Engineering was founded by Mike Thomas. Having personally priced and planned the project since tender stage, Mike has remained closely involved throughout its delivery and was proud to be on site overseeing this week's installation.
Watching the final deck section fit perfectly into place was a proud moment and a reminder of how far the company has come in the last 25 years. What began as a small local business is now delivering one of the most significant bridge projects undertaken in Wales in recent years.
To make the occasion even more memorable, Mike's son, Alex, was also part of the installation team. While seeing the next generation helping to deliver such a landmark project was a proud moment for the family, the ultimate achievement belongs to the wider MWT team, whose teamwork, skill and professionalism have made this possible and continue to drive MWT forward.
There's still plenty of work ahead before the bridge opens to the public, but seeing the full deck in place is a proud moment for everyone involved.

Another 8t Kobelco excavator delivered this week from Molson Equipment. This machine was purchased as part of our renewal programme, replacing an older machine , insuring that we have updated and reliable equipment for use on our sites. we are loving the blue and yellow livery on these excavators.

Over the last 3 weeks, MWT have been working on two head wall schemes for Conwy County Borough Council. The existing outfalls had been undermined and had started to collapse leaving a steep drop from the highway. MWT Replaced road crossing pipework on one scheme and rebuilt both head walls in masonry faced reinforced concrete with associated concrete spillways, site fencing and highway patch surfacing. works finished today. Well done team, new job starts next week .

Quick update on our Sappers bridge project - During July the main cables where winched into position and connected to the anchor stays on each bank. The hanger cables and turnbuckles that connect the bridge deck to the main cables where then installed. The lads fixing the hanger cables had to work out of a man-rider basket and be guided to the exact fixing location by our Engineer who was set up , with his instruments, on the East bank. Over recent weeks much of the construction activity has taken place within the site boundaries, meaning there has been relatively little impact for local residents and road users. However, significant progress has been made behind the scenes and a number of key elements are now visibly taking shape.

West abutment
Coping stones to the west abutment were successfully installed last weekend and this area is now ready for bridge installation, currently planned for mid-August. The first bridge section will arrive on site as individual steel components and be assembled into a 5.5m-long bay within the temporary lane closure on the west side. Once assembled, this will become the first section to be lifted into position.
Our current programme is to commence assembly during the week commencing 10 August, with lifting operations planned for the week commencing 17 August

The temporary road widening on old church road needs to remain in place until, the lifting operations are complete, this is to keep road closures during bridge installation to a minimum and ensure that caravans can safely travel past the works . As soon and the bridge sections are installed , the path leading to the west abutment will be completed and the traffic pushed over to the bridge side of the road. With the graveyard side of the road closed , we will then remove the temporary graveyard access and rebuild the masonry boundary wall

East abutment
The masonry cladding to the river side edge has been completed this week and the masons will now finish the cladding to the abutment and piers, we expect this to be finished next week. The steel work for the bridge deck is currently being delivered and you may notice the teams assembling these into sections that will be lifted and hung from the main cable. We hope to have all the required steelwork delivered by the end of next week and these will start being installed week commencing 17th. Floating pontoons will be positioned within the river and used to transport assembled bridge sections beneath the main suspension cables. A 130-tonne crane will then lift each section into position where it can be connected to the permanent cable hanger system. This sequence will be repeated until all eight primary bridge sections have been installed.
The upcoming bridge er****on represents a significant milestone for the project and will be one of the most visible phases of construction to date.

East Retaining wall
The major retaining wall running alongside the A470 has now been completed. Scaffolding is currently being removed, which will allow the team to commence drainage installation and construction of the adjacent pedestrian route.

East Approach
Construction of the path east of the bridge will cut off access to the bridge for heavy plant. The bridge steelwork needs to be installed and the field around the bridge reinstated before we can carry on with path construction. Available drainage and the northern kerb line has been installed but there will not be much else done here until around the end of August, it will then be all systems go to work our way out of the site towards the A470.

Eastern ramp from the A470
The last section of works to be done will be the construction on the eastern ramp from the A470. The ramp currently in place is a temporary access and this will need to be removed before we can start forming the permanent embankment. We can not remove the temporary ramp until the path from the bridge to our compound is complete and we have removed all our site cabins etc, we also have a large manhole and sewer protection slabs to install where the new embankment will sit.

As we move into the bridge installation phase, site activity and visible progress will increase considerably. We would like to thank local residents, businesses and road users for their continued patience and support while we complete this important community infrastructure project.

• Documentation done for another 2 jobs starting next Monday.
• still working on 4 tenders that go in next week

We have been delighted to welcome Leo Fitz Story for work experience this week.
We hope Leo has found his time with us both interesting and inspiring. During his placement, he has had the opportunity to witness the installation of the main suspension cables at Sappers Bridge, providing valuable insight into a unique civil engineering project.
Leo has also assisted our engineering team with checking turnbuckle dimensions and exploring the intricacies of theoretical sag calculations, helping to ensure the accurate positioning of the hanger clamps.
It has been a pleasure having Leo as part of the team, and we would like to thank him for his enthusiasm and contribution throughout the week. We wish him every success with his future studies and career aspirations
