Did I say I was an approved Loxone partner Loxone UK and install Smart Home systems? This particular Smart Home first fix well underway, can’t wait to see it up and running and earning it’s keep 😊. Watch this space for more on this.

Thought I’d post a “What good looks like” photo after the last few posts showing “What bad looks like”. This is a maintenance free junction box with a cable join using suitably sized (for current and cable size) Wago connectors. Earth wires (cpc) used for earth and sleeved green and yellow, switch wires sleeved brown, all contained within the Wago junction box. This box can be tucked away safely in the ceiling space. Ideally cables should be labelled to provide information to the next “sparky” who may come across this joint.

Naughty naughty very naughty…..using the CPC (earth conductor) in a T&E (twin and earth) cable as a current carrying conductor in a 2 way lighting circuit. Again, thankfully this was being removed as part of the Quinetic lighting upgrade using switches without wires. Give me a call to discuss any issues or concerns you may have in your home.

Installing a new kitchen circuit today and came across some very dodgy wiring during the deconstruct. Good job all this was going to be redundant and new wiring fully compliant to the 18th edition regs and Part P of the building regs going in. This sort of thing sadly is not uncommon, please be mindful when modifying circuits - your safety and those who live within the house will be at risk if changes are not correctly implemented. Give me a call to discuss should you have any concerns or need any advice.

Come rain or shine, day or night, an electricians job is never done. This job was at home, a bit of rain and damp conditions caused the outside lights to trip the earth leakage unit. Upon investigation I found a number of cable joints incorrectly terminated I.e chocky block and insulation tape. As you can see from the photos, not something that will last the rest of time. I’ve re terminated all the connections using Wago connectors and junction boxes. If you’ve got intermittent issues with outside lights, there is probably some damp in the circuit, give me a call to discuss if the above is of interest.

My last post showed the preparation for this consumer unit replacement yesterday. Clearly, disruption to the client should be kept to an absolute minimum and as a result of the upfront effort, the power was off for only 2 hours and 20 minutes. I’m very happy with the way this work turned out, a couple of curve balls thrown in during the task but all resolved with no problems. The new consumer unit is packed with the latest safety upgrades including surge protection and RCD for all circuits.

Some preparation for a job next week. A new 18th Edition compliant consumer unit complete with surge protection to be fitted in place of an old version without the latest safety features. The consumer unit will also be moved down to make more accessible as the original one is mounted at ceiling height. To minimise site time and disruption to the client, I have pre-wired the consumer unit to the junction box in my workshop, this will mean around 3-4 hours less time on site and less time the power will be off. As part of the work, and a requirement of changing consumer units, all existing circuits must be checked for safety before the changes are made, all part of the service making your homes safer. Should you require a no obligation conversation about safety upgrades to your home, reach out and message me 😀.

Out with the old and in with the new. Replacing old high wattage (400W) floodlights with new brighter lower wattage (150W) LED floodlights. Also replaced the flat twin and earth cable (not good for outdoors use) with tough cable and a new waterproof (IP68) junction box. All in all replaced 2400W of lighting with 800W of lighting and brighter to boot. Message me if you would like a no obligation conversation about how I can support you to lower your energy bills.

Just 3 reasons why it’s important to have your property regularly checked for electrical safety. Picture 1 showing heat damage to a neutral wire and insulation damage to the cables. There was no protection for the cable as it came through the metal back box, a simple rubber grommet is all that is needed to prevent this. Picture 2 shows poorly extended cables resulting in a loose connection that parted when I removed the socket top. Loose connections are fire hazards!!! Picture 3 again showing damage to the insulation down to the bare conductor.
I can carry out electrical safety checks on your property with no obligation to use me to resolve any issues I may find. Peace of mind that your electrical system is safe and does not present a safety hazard to you and your family is worth the cost of the inspection. Message me for details and availability.

You come across some funny things during an install. This particular lighting circuit for a large arena with 8 floodlights had a problem with low insulation resistance to earth causing the RCD to trip. Upon investigation I found the culprit to be a junction box full of mud as ants had decided to make this their home. A clean out of the box and re-termination of the cables cleared the fault and allowed the lights to be turned on. I’m sorry to say that a number of ants were injured as part of this work 😂. A follow up job to replace all of the junction boxes and an upgrade of the lighting to LED floods is planned for later in the year…..watch this space.
