Last week, we trimmed and tidied these large laurel hedges, getting them neat, shaped and ready for the summer months ahead ☀️

Laurel hedges can put on a lot of growth at this time of year, so regular maintenance helps keep them looking smart, manageable and healthy, while also improving light and keeping pathways, boundaries and garden spaces clear.

A good hedge trim can make such a difference to the overall feel of a garden — especially as we start spending more time outdoors.

If your hedges are starting to take over, now is a great time to get them back under control.

Do you know the difference? 🌳

Our customers often ask us what the difference is between a crown lift, crown thin and crown reduction — so here’s a simple breakdown:

Crown Thinning
Selectively reduces the density of the canopy, allowing more light and airflow through the tree while maintaining its overall size and natural shape.

Crown Lifting
Removes selected lower branches to increase clearance, helping to improve light, access and visibility around buildings, roads and pathways.

Crown Reduction
Reduces the overall size and spread of a tree while maintaining its natural form, helping to manage growth, improve safety and support long-term tree health.

Not sure what your tree needs? A professional assessment will help determine the most suitable approach.

Recently we completed a large hedge cutting job in Woodbridge, here are some small snippets of our work.

Regular hedge cutting keeps conifers healthy, dense and under control. If they’re left too long, they can quickly get out of shape and harder to manage.

You might notice brown patches inside a conifer hedge. This is usually where light can’t reach, and unfortunately, that growth won’t come back. Regular maintenance helps prevent this and keeps the hedge looking its best.

Heading into the weekend and thinking about the garden?

Not every improvement needs a full overhaul.

Sometimes it’s the simple, natural touches that make a space feel better:

🌿A bit more light coming through the trees
🌿Fresh woodchip to tidy things up
🌿Accenting a well-shaped tree with festoon lights for those summer evenings
🌿A few natural features that actually belong in the space

From our side, a lot of this starts with the trees themselves. When they’re managed properly, everything else in the garden just works better.

If something’s not quite right and you can’t put your finger on it, ensuring your trees are working with your garden is often a good place to start.

Enjoy the weekend 👍

Cheap tree work can end up costing far more than doing it properly💰

We’re often called in after work has gone wrong — unsafe cuts, damaged trees or unnecessary removals that could have been avoided.

What starts as a quick saving can lead to:

🌳Ongoing issues with tree health
⚠️Safety risks
❌Damage to surrounding areas
💷More expensive corrective work

Whether it’s a domestic garden or a larger site, tree work needs to be planned and carried out properly.

If you’re unsure what’s needed, it’s always better to get it assessed first.

A little taste of here in Essex 🌼🌳

This Laburnum archway, planted around 1995, comes alive for just a couple of weeks each year.

An incredible sight when in full flower and a valuable source of food for pollinators at this time of year.

Gone almost as quickly as it arrives — enjoy it while it lasts.

Are your trees ready for the warmer weather?☀️

With temperatures rising, it’s a good time to take a closer look at the trees in your garden.

Heat, dry conditions and increased leaf cover can all highlight underlying issues that aren’t always obvious earlier in the year.

Things like:
🌿 Dead or weakened branches
🌿 Dense canopies catching more wind
🌿 Signs of stress from previous seasons

Most of the time, it’s nothing urgent. But it’s often easier to deal with things early, rather than once problems develop.

A quick check now can make all the difference later in the summer.

A lot of the timber you see us remove doesn’t go far…

It ends up here 👉 Blakes Logs

Our sister company, where it’s processed, seasoned and turned into firewood rather than going to waste 🌿

They share a lot more of that side of the work over there, so if you’re interested in how it all comes together, it’s well worth a follow🪵
