🔵 A little behind the scenes on an air conditioning installation.

Here I’m pulling a vacuum on the pipework before the system is commissioned. This removes air and moisture from the system and is an important step in getting the installation right.

Mirror, mirror on the wall… is there a cable there at all? ⚡

Unfortunately, on this occasion there was! I was recently called out to repair a cable after a customer accidentally drilled through it while hanging a mirror in their lounge.

Before drilling into a wall, remember that concealed cables are normally run within prescribed cable zones:

🔹 Top zone: Within 150mm of where the wall meets the ceiling.
🔹 Corner zones: Within 150mm of internal or external wall corners.
🔹 Accessory zones: Directly horizontally or vertically in line with sockets, switches and other electrical accessories.
🔹 Thin walls: If the wall is 100mm thick or less, cable zones from the opposite side of the wall also apply.

🎣 Gone fishing… electrician style! ⚡

Sometimes running a new cable is less about being an electrician and more about being a professional fisherman. 😂

Floorboards up, rods out and a bit of patience — all to get the cable exactly where it needs to be while keeping disruption to a minimum.

No fish caught today… but we did land the cable. 🎣⚡

⚠️ Called out to a customer whose cooker had stopped working—and this is what I found.

A loose electrical connection had severely overheated and damaged the cable to the point of failure, causing the cooker to stop working. Thankfully, the fault was discovered before it developed into a fire.

As a firefighter, I’ve seen first-hand the damage electrical fires can cause. Please be careful who you trust to carry out electrical work in your home.

Making something work is one thing. Making sure it’s installed correctly and remains safe is another.

Always use a qualified, registered electrician. ⚡️

Changed out a shower switch this week that had failed. It had got so hot from arcing due to loose connections a terminal melted from the switch. Thankfully on this occasion there was no fire but does highlight the importance of getting your electrical system tested.

When should I get an electrical installation condition report? (EICR)

For home owners it’s recommended at least every 10 years for landlords it’s mandatory to have a property test at least every 5 years.

Another recent installation for a brand new garden office.

From the start, we spent time communicating with the customer to fully understand their needs and how the space would be used. This allowed us to create a detailed electrical design that ensures everything is safe, compliant with regulations, and practical for everyday use.

All certification was provided and Building Control sign-off has been completed. ✔️
