Last of a set of three gates ive been making recently got fit today. Friendship and Camaraderie amongst local trades in and around Cockermouth is something nice to be part of. This big heavy hardwood gate was always going to be a struggle to get to site. A call to a freind this morning, he himself a Plasterer, to assist me getting it onto the van roof rack. Happy to be late for his job to help me. Knowing also some local builders from Aspatria were onsite to help me off the van and into position. Couldn’t have managed with them. Gates sorted now, the last remaining softwood one will be replaced in a few years time. Painted brown in the meantime. Next job for me, some bespoke shaker doors for some bedroom units.

Back into Vinyl? Back into moulding planes? Who’d have thought it? Over the years we’d have loads of these in the workshop. More ornaments than anything else. Just like old my old albums, and now CDs they got binned along the way. Nostalgia, retro, old school…. Whatever it is, a collection yet again begins. Luckily an inexpensive one this time. These old moulding planes, £5 each, Justified today, he gloats, “gets his £5er back” A little bit of skirting needed to match a simple little bead mould. Much quicker to grab the moulding plane. No screaming router, no dust, noise etc. life the old tool yet again.

The Tortoise? Better to spend a slow morning pushing bits of ply around and making templates, especially when working with heavy, 40mm solid English Oak and bendy walls. This little River Table - Breakfast Bar, fit right out the gun today, one little corner needed a nudge into the plaster, that was all. Photos don’t really do it the justice it deserves. The long Mitre and its detail looks great. All sections prepared off site to the templates. Another coat of finish tomorrow and it’s job done.

It’s a great feeling completing a project that may have started from an initial meet with a customer, often many months previously. Taking measurements, often revisiting more than once, just to check, and check….. check once more? Then the kitchen table on a Sunday morning…. making a cutting list. Delivery of timber, marking out, cutting out, glue ups, clean ups….. often a sleepless night before the fit, not often, Always! Will it fit, dam forgot to order this or that? Then it fits, such a relief. Even after all these years the thrill still exists. Nothing like seeing the whole job through. It doesn’t there end? The frequent stops when driving by, often years after, just to check, again? How it’s weathering, how it’s doing 😁

Made these Hardwood Gates a few weeks back. Had all that nice sunshine to get them fit. Got a soaking today, Sod’s Law. First few hours of the morning was dry enough for me to commit. Then came the rain. A tough day, but it all came together and was nice to get them on.

Stumbled on a little trick today while morticing some dense Hardwood. It was more the fear of burning out the chisel as it was hotting up a little. I nudged the chisel in about 1/8 to get a reference. Then in the 1/2 Mortice I bore in with a 3/8 auger on my cordless. Just enough to ease the pressure from the Mortice chisel, and my right arm!.

If someone had said to the 20yr old me that In my mid 50s I’d be choosing cutting big tenons by hand, over machines or power tools, I’d be laughing at them…… but a shift happens where the enjoyment and rewards from process, far out way the end result, and the pay cheque. The tang of the hammer on oak wedged tenon, the squelch of the glue when the cramps are tightened. Suddenly the small things become as rewarding as the end product? Didn’t see this coming 😉

Shop made Jig made for this new little bit of kit I just purchased. A UJK drill guide, now has an extended base. Im really pleased with it. Perfect on this project, drilling out little mortises for some spindle inserts for Garden gate I’m making. Initially bought for a handrail job I have coming off….. But thought I’d try it out and have a practice.

Last week was an interesting week at work. For a while I’ve been toying with a reverting to a simpler, greener and possibly a more enjoyable method of working. Much to my surprise, as much as it shouldn’t be, a very productive way too. Working on noisy industrial woodworking machines for many years now, the pull towards reverting back to hand tools has been something I’ve been itching to do. I have 3 sets of hardwood garden gates to make and thought I’d make a start. I have a vintage Sorby Rip Saw that I’d sharpened especially (that’s a dying art in itself) a recently purchased Veritas rip tenon saw, and a Japanese pull saw. For the 8”tenons the Sorby was the winner, for the 4” it was the Back Saw. The pull saw was ok, but not for me. Anyways, without the machine set up time, Noise, dust, etc this was not a slow process once I was moving, an enjoyable and rewarding way of working too. Tenons all pretty good from the saw and only a tickle up with the block plane required. For small projects it’ll now be the way forward for me.
