🌳 Tree of the Week: Arbutus unedo (Killarney Strawberry Tree) 🌳

This is a tree with real character, and one I’m always happy to talk about.

It’s Ireland’s national tree, and it does something in autumn that very few trees can manage: white, urn-shaped flowers and ripening strawberry-like fruits appear together on the same branches, from October right through to December. Add glossy evergreen leaves and peeling, cinnamon-red bark, and you’ve got a tree that’s got something to say in every season.

Those twisted, gnarled stems on older trees aren’t a flaw either. They’re the result of decades of battering by coastal winds, and it’s a kind of character you simply can’t rush.

It’s also fully hardy, slow-growing, drought-tolerant once established and doesn’t need much attention, so it suits Surrey gardens very well. Blackbirds love the fruit, and the late flowers are a welcome source of nectar for bumblebees. As for eating them yourself, they’re edible but mild and a bit mealy. The Latin name is said to mean “I eat only one”!

Don’t panic, it might not be dead! 🌿💚

We’ve had a call from a customer worried that their shrub hadn’t survived the summer, and it won’t be the only one. After the heat we’ve had, plenty of plants look brown, bare or sorry for themselves right now.

But looking dead isn’t the same as being dead. When Dave visited our grower in Italy, he spotted herbaceous hibiscus that had been through a severe summer and were back with a vengeance, lush with fresh new growth.

Before you reach for the spade, try the scratch test. Gently scratch a little bark from a stem with your fingernail. Green or white underneath means it’s alive. Work from the tips downwards, as dead tips don’t mean a dead plant.

Most shrubs just need time, so hold off digging anything out. If you’re not sure, pop in and see the team. We’re always happy to give a second opinion.

We had a customer this week who did exactly the right thing — sat down, took their time, and really felt the quality of our Oxley's examples before deciding.

A quiet corner of one of our favourite projects, looking suitably atmospheric this time of year. The arch could have history etched into every brick — the kind of structure that makes you wonder what spooky things it's seen. We just couldn't resist the "midnight" filter!

Still just as magical whatever the season — summer barbecues or October shadows, it does both brilliantly.

🌳 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸: 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗮 (𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗸𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲) 🌳

Picture dozens of ghostly white flags hanging from the branches, trembling in the breeze. That's the Handkerchief Tree in May, and once you've seen it, you won't forget it.

Here's a fact worth knowing: those white "handkerchiefs" aren't petals at all. They're bracts — modified leaves — and no two are quite the same size, which is exactly what gives the display its flutter. Some call it the Dove Tree, some the Ghost Tree. Either name earns its place.
I won't pretend it's a quick win — most specimens take several years to flower after planting. But every year it grows, it gets more beautiful, and when those first bracts finally appear, the wait makes it all the sweeter. A more established specimen from us can shorten that wait considerably.
Full sun to partial shade, shelter from strong wind, and Surrey's soil suits it well. This is a tree for a medium to large garden, planted as a standalone specimen where the whole canopy can be admired.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻 🌰🕷️

An office debate broke out this morning: do conkers on the windowsill really keep spiders away? Half the team swears by it, the other half reckons it's an old wives' tale — and with houses apparently full of eight-legged visitors right now, it felt worth settling once and for all.

The honest answer: there's no solid scientific evidence that conkers repel spiders. But they've been used as a folk remedy for generations, they're free, they're pretty, and they do no harm — so where's the downside in trying?

Either way, it's hard not to love conker season. Shiny, polished, impossible to walk past without picking one up.

Last stop before home 🇮🇹✈️

Dave's final day in Tuscany, and he's saved some good ones for last: miles of wisteria as far as the eye can see, olives ready and waiting to make the journey over, and a brilliant batch of Mahonia 'Soft Caress' that's caught his eye.

He's on his way back to us now, and will be on site from Saturday — full of knowledge, new contacts, and no doubt a few stories from the trip. 🌿

That's persimmons sorted for next year 🧡

Dave, standing in front of rows and rows of persimmon trees in Tuscany, sourcing stock for next season. A bit of a funny story behind this one: we somehow became the biggest UK supplier of persimmons last year, and the algorithms have decided we're the experts. We're not about to argue.

𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗧𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘆 🇮🇹☀️

First stop: a field of cloud pruned olive trees, and the photos don't disappoint. This style of pruning shapes the canopy into rounded, sculptural clouds — genuinely architectural, and unlike anything you'll usually see in a British garden.

A fair warning if you're tempted: this look takes real skill and regular maintenance to keep its shape. But as a statement piece, it's hard to beat.
