Bit of a before, during and after of a clarinet service for a returning customer. It's not been used for errrrrmmmm "quite some time" and she wants to press it back into service. No camera trickery, no edits, it really has gone THAT green!

So it's all come apart, a few new pads, a LOT of cleaning and polishing, oil in all the pivots and screws, and back together looking a LOT happier!

Stupid little first job for the afternoon - make a new chisel handle.

Now it's not like I only have one chisel, but this one lives on the wall next to the screwdrivers. It's not something I'd normally buy, but it actually came in the supplied toolkit at Newark school of violin making. They were deemed to be "ok for a modern chisel" . Anyhoo, there was lovely "soft grip" stuff on the handle which finally made a bid for freedom, in amongst a miserable hot glue scraping, strut prying job yesterday afternoon, leaving a horrific sticky mess. On the one hand, I could've just chucked it away (let's face it, I've had my money's worth!) but on the other, isn't it nice now! 😂

A bit of variety from the bench..

A "not been used for.... errrrrmmmm.... a long time" violin in for a little crack near the saddle and a decent bridge (then I noticed the fingerboard was a bit loose, so I'm re fitting that while I'm there.

An electric ukulele came in to have a switch moved to a place where it doesn't get hit whilst playing, along with checking the fretwork over and a quick setup.

A very grubby violin which I neglected to take "after" pictures of, which went back to it's happy owner barely recognisable after a serious clean, new bridge, tailpiece and strings.

Why would you? It's just mean! That's right - some plonker has nailed a chunk of the back seam of this bass together 🤦🏻

Remember the bass with the canvas glued to the front? Well, it's together!

It had obviously had a C extension fitted before (nut cut, scroll drilled) so I've made a basic one of those (might add some gates to it in the future)

I fancied a compensated tailpiece to suit the long c string (so I can set the after length to 1/6 of the string length) so I grabbed a bit of maple and made one.

I've only had a quick play, but it responds really nicely!

When "can you restring this" REALLY means "can you check the frets, remove the filth, check the machine heads are tight ...

The front is back on though after the surgery to the ribs. I've added a few reinforcement braces to the ribs too. (As all the damage is confined to them, rather than the front or back, I thought a little bit of bracing may not go amiss!

Here's a lesson in getting your money's worth!

A bridge which had warped and tender to fall over - took it off to find it cracked - just barely holding together!

And a gut tailgut which had lost its knot from one end- again, something which could have failed any second!

All sorted with a nice new bridge and modern nylon tailgut.
