🏠 What is a Dry Ridge System, and why do we recommend them?

A dry ridge system is a modern method of mechanically fixing ridge and hip tiles to a roof, removing the need to rely on traditional mortar to hold them in place.

Rather than bedding the tiles onto cement, a dry ridge system uses a ventilated roll, fixings and mechanical clamps to securely fix each ridge tile to the roof.

🔨 Why choose dry ridge over mortar?

• Maintenance free – no mortar to crack, crumble or require repointing over time
• Mechanically fixed – every ridge tile is securely fixed rather than relying solely on a mortar bond
• Better ventilation – most systems provide continuous high-level roof ventilation
• Cleaner finish – gives the ridge and hips a neat, consistent appearance
• Built for modern roofing standards – mechanical fixing provides a more reliable long-term solution, particularly in exposed weather conditions

Traditional mortar systems can still have their place. On listed buildings, conservation projects or properties where maintaining a traditional appearance is important, a mortar-bedded ridge may be more appropriate or required.

For most modern reroofs, however, we recommend a properly installed dry ridge system for its durability, security and minimal ongoing maintenance.

At Virtue Roofing, we install both traditional and modern roofing systems, selecting the most appropriate method for the property rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

This property has been transformed with new plain concrete roof tiles, giving it a clean, sharp finish while providing long-term protection from the elements.

The roof has been completed with a full dry ridge system, removing the reliance on traditional mortar and providing a secure, low-maintenance finish. The ridge line has then been neatly finished with mono ridge tiles for a smart, professional appearance.

A simple roof design, but one where getting the details right makes all the difference. 👌

☀️ A throwback to sunnier days…

As summer comes to a close, we thought it was fitting to share one of our favourite recent projects, completed on a day when the weather was definitely on our side!

A beautiful fibre cement slate reroof, giving this property a clean, sharp finish while providing a durable roofing system built for the years ahead.

The roof was finished with a full dry ridge and dry hip system, creating a neat, mechanically fixed finish without relying on traditional mortar bedding.
