People think we’re just plasterers.

And to be fair… "Plastering" is right there in the name. 😂

But there’s a lot more to what we do than just putting plaster on walls.

Our team also carries out:

🔨 Stud partition walls
🏠 Internal wall insulation
🔧 Renovation and refurbishment work
🏡 Full home renovation projects

So whether you’re looking to transform one room, improve the insulation in your home, create new rooms with stud partitioning, or take on a much bigger renovation project, we can help.

And if there’s something outside our area of expertise, we’re not going to pretend otherwise. We’d rather point you towards people we know and trust to do the job properly, like Naomi Parker Interiors and J Jackson Plumbing & Heating.

That’s the way we like to work: good workmanship, good people, and getting the right trades involved when they’re needed.

We do what it says on the tin…

But we do so much more than that.

10 THINGS EVERY ASPIRING PLASTERER NEEDS TO KNOW 👇

Thinking about becoming a plasterer?

Here’s the stuff nobody tells you before you start…

1️⃣ Efficiency beats speed. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Being fast means nothing if you’re rushing around making mistakes. Learn to work efficiently and the speed comes naturally.

2️⃣ It WILL ruin your body.
Your back, knees, shoulders, hands… they’ll all have something to say about it eventually. And yes, you’ll basically always be tired. 😂

3️⃣ It’s a REALLY messy job.
…until you get good at it. Then you realise how much mess you used to make. 😂

4️⃣ You never EVER master it.
Every time you think you’ve finally cracked it, a ceiling, wall or awkward job comes along and reminds you that you know absolutely nothing.

5️⃣ You’ll spend more on washing machines and dryers than the average person.
Plaster dust gets EVERYWHERE. Somehow, it even gets into places you didn’t know existed.

6️⃣ You’re only ever as good as your last job.
Nobody cares how good the last 100 jobs were if you leave a bad one behind. Every job is another chance to prove yourself.

7️⃣ DO NOT GET PLASTER IN YOUR EYE.
Seriously. Don’t.
It fu***ng hurts. 🤣

8️⃣ You’ll spend the rest of your life walking into rooms and immediately looking UP.
Ceilings. Cracks. Bad joints. Dodgy patches.
You can’t switch it off.

9️⃣ When things go wrong… DON’T LOSE YOUR HEAD.
They will go wrong. Something will go wrong eventually. Take a breath, work out what you need to do and keep going.
You’ll get there in the end.

🔟 It’s the BEST job in the world.
…on the good days anyway. 😂

Would you add anything to the list? 👇

RISING DAMP... OR SOMETHING ELSE?

If you've got damp at the bottom of a wall, one of the first things you might be told is:

“That's rising damp.”

But it isn't necessarily.
And this is something I think more homeowners should know about.

Most houses old and new have a damp-proof course (DPC) built into the wall. Its job is to stop moisture from the ground travelling up through the wall.

So what happens if the DPC is still there but something is bridging it?

Think of the DPC like a barrier.
If something is touching the wall above and below that barrier, you've basically created a route for moisture to get around it.

That's called bridging the DPC.
It can happen in a number of ways.
External ground levels can be too high. A path or patio can be built up against the wall. Render or plaster can run down past the DPC.

And something I see particularly interesting in older houses with suspended timber floors is what's underneath the floor.

Over the years, the void can become full of old plaster, rubble, soil and building debris.

That can cause more than one problem.
It can restrict the ventilation underneath the timber floor, create a damp environment and, if the debris is high enough, bridge the DPC.

So you can end up with damp showing at the bottom of the wall.

It can look like rising damp.

But the problem isn't necessarily that moisture is naturally rising up through a failed DPC.

The DPC could still be doing its job.
Something may simply be giving the moisture a way around it.

Then you've got penetrating damp, which is completely different again. That's where water is getting into the building from somewhere such as defective pointing, gutters, roof defects, cracks, pipes or damaged render.
And there's condensation, where moisture in the air turns into water when it hits a cold surface.

So when you see damp at the bottom of a wall, there isn't one automatic answer.

Rising damp is real. But not every damp wall is rising damp.

Sometimes the answer is above ground.
Sometimes it's outside. Sometimes it's underneath the floor.

And sometimes the DPC hasn't failed at all — it's been bridged.

That's why I think it's important to find the actual cause of the damp before deciding what treatment the wall needs.

Don't just treat the symptom.
Find the cause first.

From tired and failed lath and plaster to a clean, smooth finish 🔨

This project is a great example of the difference proper plastering can make.

The existing wall was taken back, exposing the original lath and plaster, we removed this due to no longer being stable. Then we added the plasterboards, and plastered it back to a smooth, clean finish.

At BOACO Plastering Services, we take on all types of plastering work, from individual rooms and ceilings to renovation projects where the existing walls need considerably more attention.
Our services include:

🔨 Wall plastering
🔨 Ceiling plastering
🔨 Skimming
🔨 Plaster repairs
🔨 Mould removal
🔨 Artex ceilings
🔨 Internal wall insulation

Another plastering transformation completed 👏

What started as a tired, uneven surface with visible joints, patches and unfinished areas has been transformed into a clean, smooth finish ready for decorating.

This project included detailed wall and ceiling plastering, working around the curved sections and awkward angles to achieve a consistent finish throughout.

At BOACO Plastering Services, we take pride in the preparation and finishing work that makes the difference between an average job and a professional result.

Just a simple patch up… 👀

A lot of people assume a small patch repair is easier than plastering a full wall.
In reality, getting a repair like this right can take more skill.

With a full wall, you’re working with a fresh surface. With a patch, you have to work into the existing plaster and carefully blend the new work into what’s already there.

Getting that blend right so you can’t see where the repair starts and the old plaster finishes is the real skill.

It might look like a simple patch… but making it disappear when the job is finished is a different story.

Sunday evening is the worst time of the week......

When you run your own trade business, your weekend doesn't actually end when the sun goes down on Sunday.

While everyone else is unwinding for the night, you're sitting at the kitchen table sorting van stock for Monday, mapping out the week's routes, typing up quotes from Saturday viewings, and replying to messages.

The mental checklist just never seems to turn off.

So why do it you might ask?

Well that's a fantastic question. And to be completely honest, I'm not sure 😂. But i'd be lying if I said I didn't love it. It's a kind of addiction for sure.

Don't get me wrong, it takes up all of your spare time. Your phone rings at the dinner table and you're constantly thinking three jobs ahead.

However I have the freedom of ownership. I can honestly look at the work we produce and know that our reputation is built on our own standards, not some corporate checklist. I get to choose the quality of the work and ensure the job is done right, without a manager telling me to cut corners to save a few quid.

If you're sitting there on a Sunday night dreading your 9-5 job and thinking of picking up your tools to go solo, understand this. It’s a massive leap of faith and it will test you every single week.

And if you're already out there surviving the Sunday night admin rush then I take my hat off to you.
