We've just finished a beautiful traditional pantile roof restoration in Wrington, and it's been one of those jobs where so much of the work has gone into preserving and strengthening the original building.
Once the roof was stripped, we uncovered extensive woodworm damage in the roof timbers. Rather than replacing the original structure, we carefully restored it by mirroring new timbers alongside the existing ones to reinforce them while retaining as much of the original character as possible. We also secured all of the wall plates, replacing the old rusted fixings with new stainless steel fixings to ensure everything is solid for many years to come.
Over the years, many different replacement pantiles had been mixed in, so every tile had to be sorted and graded before relaying. Working with around 25 different types of pantiles takes time and patience, but the finished roof now looks as it should while making the best use of the original materials.
The chimney also received a full restoration. We removed the failing blown render, replaced the rusty bell casts with stainless steel, completed the new rendering, renewed all of the leadwork, and finished it with a dry ridge system for a durable, weatherproof finish.
To complete the project, we reshaped the fascias to suit the new structural timbers, bringing the front of the building back into line where years of movement had left it out of square. We installed new timber barge boards, capped them with UPVC for long-lasting protection, fitted a ventilated ridge system, and completed new leadwork and a new bell cast where the roof meets the house wall.
A lot of hard work has gone into this one, but we're delighted with the finished result. It's always rewarding to restore a traditional roof while preserving as much of its original character as possible.
