The first autumn hues.

The change is happening slowly in the garden.

These small changes are part of what makes a garden so rewarding to look after; there’s always something new to notice as the seasons shift.

From a concept plan to a planting direction.

A glimpse into the early stages of a new garden design, looking at how the different spaces connect, how the garden will be experienced, and the planting character that will bring it all together.

At this stage, it’s still an idea on paper. But this is where the garden starts to take shape.

One plant, two seasons.

Hypericum brings more than its bright yellow flowers to the garden.

As the flowers fade, clusters of red berries follow, adding another layer of colour and interest as the season changes.

It’s these small transitions that can make a planting scheme feel interesting for longer.

Colour, movement and seasonal interest.

Verbena bonariensis brings height and movement to this planting, weaving through the grasses and softer planting around it.

It’s a good example of how planting can create a sense of movement while continuing to offer interest as the seasons change.

The first autumn hues.

One of those moments in the garden that happens almost unnoticed.

The leaves of this Acer palmatum dissectum are beginning to change, bringing the first hints of autumn colour to the garden.

A small shift, but one that signals the season ahead.

Behind the design of a new garden project.

There’s a lot that happens before the first plant goes into the ground.

Magda is developing the overall layout for this garden, while working through the planting design for the first areas to be tackled.

The garden will evolve in stages, but the design starts by looking at the space as a whole — how the different areas connect, where the structure sits, and how the planting will bring everything together.

A first glimpse at the ideas taking shape on screen.

Some gardens stay with you.

Magda recently revisited a garden she designed in a previous role, and it was lovely to see how the planting and structure have matured over time.

One of the areas she designed was inspired by the feeling of a Mediterranean garden, with a seating area and a strong focal point surrounded by softer planting and grasses.

Seeing the focal point now, framed by established planting, is a reminder that a garden doesn’t finish when the design is implemented.

It continues to develop, change and mature with time.

A few details from a garden that Magda was very happy to see again.

There’s something about a garden that reveals itself slowly as you move through it.

This bed is a good example of how structure can hold a planting scheme together. The clipped forms of the topiary provide a sense of order, while the softer planting around them brings movement and seasonal change.

A garden doesn’t always need to make a statement. Sometimes the structure is quietly doing the work.
