Many thanks to all the architects and specifiers who chatted with David Wilson and Fraser Brown from our team at the Specifi event in London last week. These events are always well attended and the London event at the crypt of St. James’ Church, Clerkenwell didn’t disappoint!

As always, it was a great opportunity for us to understand architects’ specification challenges and respond to technical façade questions, and also a chance to discuss our SureClad®, BrickClad® and SureWall® Shackerley ISO 9001 factory pre-fabricated façade systems and materials.

In London, discussions often touch on facade material choices due to planning considerations, our capabilities for manufacturing unitized facades, and the sustainability, quality assurance and performance credentials of our facades. Our large format and XL cladding panels not only provide installation benefits for your façade projects; they provide design possibilities too.

This project in Manchester designed by Sheppard Robson Architects is a great example. The development is a high-rise residential building on a very confined city centre site. Our BBA certified SureClad® SureStone® system has been used for recessed areas of the façade to create a sense of space and contrast and the slab-to-slab XL panels play into the verticality of the design, delivering clean lines and lifting the eye skywards.

In a city where buildings are getting taller and development land is hard to come by, our SureClad® system is part of a compelling architectural narrative. Our undercut anchorages are fundamental to that performance commitment. They are designed to create a concealed, mechanical fixing by engaging with a specially formed undercut aperture drilled into the rear of the façade panel, providing a secure, stress-free fixing that distributes loads efficiently within the panel while minimising stress on the façade material. This video highlights how the fixings work, thanks to their specialised shape-locked, stress-free design:
✅We precision drill mushroom-like holes into the rear of the façade panel using a patented undercut method.
✅We check the profile of each aperture as part of our ISO 9001 QA processes using a dedicated depth control gauge to verify that it has been drilled to the correct geometry.
✅We insert the anchor into the aperture and tighten the matching bolt using a calibrated torque wrench.
✅As the bolt is tightened, it expands the anchor into the undercut section of the hole, creating a positive mechanical interlock rather than relying on friction or adhesive bonding.

We often refer to our XXL cladding panels, which enable architects to design seamless slab-to-slab facades. But just how extra large are our XXL panels?

Recently, we produced our biggest prefabricated SureClad porcelain stone panels ever and created a sample rig at one of our ISO 9001 factories in Lancashire. The panel is 3.4m high, and 1.6m wide with 100mm full height bird’s beak reveal. We have installed it next to a standard door, to highlight the scale.
