🔥 Protect Your Property: Essential Tree & Yard Tips to Reduce Wildfire Risk 🔥
With wildfire risks on the rise across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and South Yorkshire, taking proactive steps around your home can make all the difference.
As local tree care professionals, here are the top steps you can take to create Defensible Space and protect your home:
🌲 1. Clear "Ladder Fuels"
Prune lower tree branches up to 2–3 meters off the ground. This prevents ground fires from climbing into the upper tree canopy, where flames spread rapidly.
🏠 2. Clean Out Roofs & Gutters
Windblown embers are the leading cause of home fires during a wildfire. Regularly clear dry leaves, needles, and debris from gutters, roof valleys, and under decks.
✂️ 3. Thin Out Overcrowded Canopies
If tree crowns overlap, fire can leap easily from canopy to canopy. Selective pruning and crown thinning reduce fuel density and slow down fire progression.
🪵 4. Move Firewood & Chip Piles Away from Buildings
Store log piles, untreated timber, and large mulch beds at least 10 meters away from your house, garage, or shed.
🍂 5. Remove Deadwood & Hazard Trees
Dead trees, dying branches, and dried brush act as immediate tinder. Safely removing dead organic material significantly lowers the fire risk on your boundary.
💦 6. Water Deeply & Keep Your Soil Moist
Fresh, moisture-rich vegetation is much harder to ignite than drought-stressed plants.
Water Deeply: Give trees a long, slow soak at their drip line early in the morning rather than quick daily sprinkles.
Mulch Up: Apply a 5–7 cm layer of wood chips around beds to lock in moisture (just keep it 10 cm clear of main trunks). Focus extra watering on saplings and hedge borders closest to your house!
