A deceptively simple solution to an industry wide problem, that is how the judges put it.

Engineered Composites has been named a finalist in the Specialist Innovation of the Year category at the CN Specialists Awards 2026, for the development of ENGRail, our modular GRP handrail system.

Steel handrails corrode, need ongoing maintenance, and add unnecessary weight and cost over the life of a project. ENGRail was engineered to remove that problem entirely. It is a lightweight, non-conductive, maintenance-free 51mm box section system, independently tested to 1.657 kN per metre and verified to Public Assembly loading standards, a first for a GRP handrail system.

The judges also pointed to the opportunity to patent and protect the IP behind it, a strong signal for where this technology can go next.

What would a maintenance-free handrail system change on your next project?

UK grid connection demand has nearly tripled in under a year, and data centres are driving most of it.

Ofgem reported at the end of July that contracted electricity demand offers jumped from 41GW to 125GW in twelve months, with at least 80GW of that increase down to data centre schemes queuing alongside renewables and rail electrification projects. Add a construction sector finally climbing out of its worst downturn since the financial crisis, a £975m AMP8 re-opener decision for United Utilities, and steel quotas tightening further, and August has been a month of real movement across UK infrastructure.

Steel remains under pressure from July's tariff changes and nationalisation fallout, with fabricated structural steel still up over 13% year on year and freight rates climbing again. On sites facing labour shortages, grid constraints and rising steel costs, GRP keeps proving its case: no welding, no hot works permits, no corrosion risk, and decades of maintenance-free service in exactly the environments this month's stories are about, from rail safety systems to data centre rooftops.

What's the infrastructure story you're watching most closely into autumn?

Two years in the making. Gavin Williams has just published GRP Pultruded Products: A Comprehensive Technical Guide.

Composites still get limited coverage on most engineering degree courses, and that gap in familiarity, not any shortcoming in the material, has long been the biggest barrier to wider GRP adoption. This guide is Gavin's attempt to close it properly: four parts, twelve chapters, and the reference data engineers actually need day to day, including profile dimensions, section properties, chemical resistance data, fire and thermal performance, design tables and worked calculation examples.

Written for graduate engineers building the subject from first principles, for specifiers and asset owners who need a working command of the material, and for practising engineers who want a genuine desk reference for design, standards compliance, installation and maintenance.

Germany is building a hydrogen pipeline network the size of a country.
The Wasserstoff-Kernnetz is being financed as part of Germany's €500bn Infrastructure Special Fund, alongside continued grid expansion from TenneT, 50Hertz, Amprion and TransnetBW.

Valve stations, compressor stations and connection points along a hydrogen network are combustible gas environments, and the access infrastructure built around them is rarely specified with that risk in mind from the outset.

GFK, glasfaserverstärkter Kunststoff, known as GRP in English-speaking markets, is non-sparking and non-conductive by nature, the same properties already trusted in chemical plants and electrical enclosures, directly relevant to the platforms, walkways and enclosures needed across a growing hydrogen pipeline network.

As Germany's hydrogen infrastructure scales up, is material specification for the surrounding access structures keeping pace with the pipeline network itself?

US data center construction is forecast to approach $700bn in 2026. Power is what's actually slowing it down.

Spending hit $49.5bn through April 2026 alone, nearly four times the pace of a year earlier, but grid interconnection timelines are now stretching up to eight years in some locations, and power availability, not capital, is the acknowledged constraint on the entire build-out.

The substation and switchgear compounds feeding these campuses need fast, safe, non-conductive infrastructure, and steel fencing and access structures in these electrical yards add earthing and bonding requirements that slow delivery further.

FRP, fibre reinforced polymer, known as GRP in other markets, is non-conductive by nature, corrosion resistant outdoors, and installs without welding or hot works, a genuine speed advantage when the electrical yard is the actual schedule bottleneck, not the data hall itself.

As power infrastructure becomes the real constraint on data center delivery, is material specification for the electrical yard getting the same attention as the compute infrastructure it supports?

National Grid just committed £1.2bn to upgrading 1,000km of overhead transmission lines.

Balfour Beatty, M Group, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Murphy and OTW will deliver the work under the next phase of National Grid's Electricity Transmission Partnership, reconductoring existing 275kV to 400kV lines across England and Wales.

Steel fencing installed close to live overhead lines can have voltage induced into it, which is why it typically needs bonding and earthing as a safety mitigation, an extra design and installation step most site security specifications don't flag early enough.

GRP fencing is non-conductive by nature, so that risk category doesn't need to be designed around in the first place, while still delivering the structural security performance a compound on a live transmission route needs.

When was fencing material last treated as a genuine electrical safety decision on your site, rather than a straightforward security one?

Ireland is electrifying its rail network at a scale not seen before.

DART+ is delivering electrification, station upgrades and fleet expansion worth an estimated €1.2 to €2.5bn as part of Ireland's €275.4bn National Development Plan running to 2035.

As electrified track expands across the network, platform and access infrastructure sitting close to live overhead line equipment needs a genuine non-conductive safety case, not just a structural one.

GRP delivers that non-conductive property by nature, alongside anti-slip performance and corrosion resistance that hold up against Ireland's coastal and wet weather conditions without a repainting or replacement cycle.

As more of the network electrifies, is platform material specification keeping pace with the infrastructure change, or lagging a step behind it?

40 years of GRP. Engineered Composites turns 40 this month.

On 11 July, Engineered Composites Limited marked four decades of supplying GRP into rail, utilities, nuclear, defence, marine and construction. Forty years of trading, and forty years of relationships with the people and customers who have made it possible.

The market is shifting too. Steel tariffs are starting to bite, and GRP is standing toe to toe with steel on price, alongside the performance advantages it has always offered: corrosion resistance, low weight, no maintenance, electrical insulation. With over £2m of GRP pultruded stock held at our facility, we are ready to meet that demand.

Here's to the next forty years.

GRP has been in UK infrastructure since the 1970s. And the same five objections still come up in almost every sales conversation.

Let us deal with them.

'It costs too much.' Purchase price, yes. Whole-life cost over 25 years in a corrosive environment? The numbers usually say something different.

'It is not strong enough.' BS EN 13706 E23 grade. 23 GPa tensile modulus. Safety factor of 4.77 times public assembly loading on independently tested handrail systems. Strong enough.

'It only works in industrial environments.' GRP is specified in MRI suites, on pedestrian footbridges, at airports, and in commercial construction. The industrial-only assumption is about 20 years out of date.

'It is difficult to install.' Cut with a circular saw. No welding. No hot works permit. No specialist fittings. GRP scaffold tubes connect to standard steel couplers with no modification.

'It is a newer material than steel.' GRP has been in continuous UK infrastructure use since the 1970s. Engineered Composites has been supplying it since 1986.

We have written the full piece with the evidence behind each point. Read the full article here: https://engineered-composites.co.uk/five-things-people-get-wrong-about-grp/
