One decision changed the way this kitchen connects with the rest of the home.

By closing off the hallway entrance, the layout was opened up to create the U-shaped kitchen and a natural link through to the lounge. The herringbone flooring now carries you from the kitchen through the space, helping each area feel connected while keeping its own purpose.

A small change that completely shifted how the room is used.

Big changes are often made up of much smaller details. From opening up the back of a home with a new extension and wide glazing, to getting the threshold, flooring and finishes sitting exactly where they should, it all has to work together. Returning to a previous project gave us the chance to rethink how the ground floor worked as a whole. In Ealing, the lounge and dining room were separated by a load-bearing wall, leaving both spaces feeling more closed off than they needed to be. We removed the wall, installed a new structural steel and opened the two rooms into one larger living space, giving the ground floor more light and a much stronger sense of connection.

A single doorway was also widened for new glazed doors, helping light move further through the house while still allowing the rooms to be separated when needed. Once the structural work was complete, we replastered the full ground floor, matched the grey oak flooring to the earlier garage renovation and finished everything with new skirting, architraves, sockets and decoration. A relatively simple change in plan, but one that completely changed how the main living spaces feel and work day to day.

When one wall needs to do more than one job. This full-height run brings wardrobes, a media wall and extra storage together in one piece of fitted cabinetry, making much better use of the room without filling it with separate furniture. The TV sits neatly within the centre, while the wardrobes on either side keep everyday storage close by and out of sight.

Bath Road started as a shell, giving us the chance to rebuild the ground floor properly from the base up.

We removed the existing timber floor system through the bathroom, lounge and bedroom, brought in around 20 tonnes of material and rebuilt it with insulation, a reinforced concrete slab, underfloor heating and screed before laying the new timber flooring.

From there, our work continued across the kitchen, electrics, plumbing, plastering, painting and tiling. The kitchen became the main gathering space, designed around hosting friends and family, while the hallway was kept lighter and more open and the downstairs WC given its own darker character with panelling throughout.

A full ground-floor renovation managed from the structural work through to the final finishes, with our team and trusted trades working together throughout.

Bespoke joinery should respond to the room, not ask the room to work around it. These two projects show that in very different ways. In the bedroom, the wardrobe follows the sloping ceiling to use space that would otherwise be difficult to reach, with framed doors, reeded lower panels and matching drawer storage giving the whole run one consistent finish.

The bar takes a completely different approach, with full-height glazed cabinetry surrounding a central drinks area, dark painted joinery, brass detailing and illuminated glass shelving creating somewhere that feels just as much a feature of the room as it is practical storage.

Different joinery, different requirements, but the same approach: joinery designed around the architecture, the available space and how it will actually be used.

Work is now underway at Field Road.

Behind the scenes, we’ve already spent a lot of time working through the layout with the clients so the space is used properly before the finishes start going in. That includes relocating the downstairs WC, moving the boiler into a custom pantry, opening up the hallway and replacing the old conservatory with a new extension. From the kitchen and storage through to the bathroom, wardrobes and flooring, every part of the renovation is being planned together so the house works as one complete home.

The Beeches is a detached 1930s Arts & Crafts home in Chorleywood, shaped around a couple who wanted every room to feel purposeful, comfortable and built for the way they live now.

The ground floor is organised around a broken-plan kitchen, breakfast and garden room, with a walk-in pantry and curved drinks bar close by. The study becomes a proper working library, the boot room handles the practical side of daily life, and the living room is centred around the fire for quieter evenings and family gatherings.

Upstairs, each bedroom has its own role, from a principal suite with full-width wardrobes and a dressing area to guest rooms, a bunk room for grandchildren and a quieter fifth bedroom that can switch between reading, hobbies and overnight stays.

Across the house, the same materials and details continue from room to room, with fumed oak, aged bronze, honed stone and bespoke joinery helping the whole home feel connected rather than designed as a collection of separate spaces.
