I’ve had a few questions about Shou Sugi Ban. This is an ancient Japanese technique used to preserve wood by charring it with a flame. Traditionally used on Sugi wood, a Japanese cedar.
It enhances durability and is a natural way to preserve wood without the use of chemicals, paints and other treatments. I think it also looks pretty smart 👌🏻. It can be used both internally and externally.

Over the last few months I’ve been building a large 4 x7m summerhouse with main room, WC/shower & office. Clad in cedar charred to achieve a Shou Sugi Ban finish & the shed clad to match.
The building is sat on charred oak piles, EPDM rubber membrane on the roof and insulation from & underfloor heating inside.
Finishing touches include bespoke oak desk & shelving, outside the space will be decked to join the two buildings.

The walls are up and the windows are in… next stop insulation and we always use ] 🐑It’s a sustainable, natural product and something we have used for centuries to keep warm!
] are a UK based company, the natural wool is breathable and far nicer to work with than processed insulation.
