A little reminder about compost bins...

They're brilliant for the garden, but they're also basically an all-you-can-eat buffet if they're not managed properly.

Keep them away from the house where possible, avoid putting meat or dairy products in them, and make sure the lid is secure.

A healthy compost heap shouldn't become a five-star restaurant for rats and other unwanted guests.

Autumn is coming... and the spiders aren't the only things looking for somewhere warm.

As temperatures start to drop, buildings become increasingly attractive to all sorts of wildlife looking for shelter.

Garages, sheds, lofts and unused outbuildings are particularly tempting.

If you've got doors that don't close properly, broken vents or gaps around the building, now is a good time to take a look.

You don't have to wait until something has moved in before doing something about it.

A wasp sting is never fun.

And while wasps aren't automatically aggressive, they're much more likely to become defensive if their nest is disturbed.

That's why we always recommend keeping your distance if you've found a nest.

Don't knock it down.

Don't spray it with whatever you've got in the shed.

And definitely don't stick your hand into a hole because you're curious!

Leave it alone and get some professional advice.

Much safer all round.

What's that smell?

It's not always obvious where a pest problem starts.

Sometimes the first sign isn't seeing anything at all. It's a strange smell coming from a wall, ceiling, cupboard or outbuilding.

It can be caused by a number of things, so we're not saying every funny smell means pests.
But if you've also noticed droppings, scratching, flies suddenly appearing or other unusual activity, it's worth getting it checked.

Your nose might have spotted the problem before your eyes do!

The garden might look a bit tired by the end of summer, but it's worth keeping on top of it.
We're not talking about having a perfectly manicured garden (picture for anyone trying to remember what that’s like!)

It's the simple things that can make a difference.

Keep grass and vegetation from getting completely out of hand around buildings, clear away rubbish and broken garden furniture, and don't leave piles of old materials sitting around for months.

The more hiding places there are, the more appealing the area becomes to all sorts of unwanted visitors.

A little garden maintenance now can save you a headache later.

Still plenty of wasp activity around at the moment.

August is often when people really start noticing them.

You may see more wasps around your garden, roofline or outbuildings as colonies are well established and activity is at its peak.

One thing we would say is don't go poking around trying to find the nest yourself.

If you've got a steady stream of wasps disappearing into a particular gap, that's a much better clue than simply seeing a few flying around.

And yes, we're still getting plenty of calls about them!

Is anyone else wondering where August went?

It won't be long before we're swapping flip-flops for wellies and starting to think about autumn.
This is actually a good time to have a look around the outside of your property.

Check the shed, garage, outbuildings and those corners of the garden that haven't been touched all summer.

It's amazing what can move in when somewhere is quiet and undisturbed.

A quick tidy-up now can make life a lot easier once the weather turns.

🐝 Bee or wasp? It's one of the questions we're asked most during the summer.

At first glance they can look very similar, but there are a few easy ways to tell them apart.

Bees are generally rounder, fuzzier and are usually focused on flowers. They're important pollinators and, unless disturbed, tend to leave people alone.

Wasps are smoother, brighter in colour and have a much slimmer waist. They're far more likely to be seen around bins, BBQs, sugary drinks and outdoor dining areas.

If you've noticed a steady stream of insects flying to and from the same hole in your roof, shed or wall, it's worth getting it checked rather than trying to identify it from a distance.

If you're ever unsure, we're always happy to help identify what you're looking at before any action is taken.

🐝 Found wasps flying in and out of the same hole?

One thing we would advise not to do is block the entrance.

It might seem like the quickest solution, but it often makes the situation worse.

The wasps trapped inside will simply look for another way out, which could mean finding a route into your loft, wall cavity or another part of the building. If the nest is still active, they won't just disappear because the original entrance has been sealed.

The safest approach is to leave the entrance alone until the nest has been treated.

If you're unsure whether you've found an active nest, send us a photo or video from a safe distance and we'll happily point you in the right direction.

Ever noticed that wasps seem much more interested in your picnic or BBQ towards the end of the summer?

There's actually a reason for it.

Earlier in the season, worker wasps spend most of their time collecting insects to feed the developing larvae in the nest. In return, the larvae produce a sweet substance that provides food for the workers.

As the summer comes to an end, the colony begins to change. There are fewer larvae to feed, so that natural food source disappears.

That's when worker wasps start searching elsewhere for something sweet – which is why they're suddenly so interested in fizzy drinks, fruit, ice cream and anything sugary left outside.

It's completely normal behaviour, even if it can be a bit frustrating when you're trying to enjoy the sunshine!
