What a joy it is to see the mass of yellow cowslip flowers thriving under the fruit trees in The Old Vicarage garden. They are extra special to me because as a child I loved reading the ‘Little Grey Rabbit’ books where she makes cowslip w**e. Once upon a time the brew was popular amongst country folk possibly because the plant produces a narcotic juice. I haven’t yet attempted to make any, maybe after I’ve finished the wild garlic pesto!

How decorative should a kitchen garden be?
Tulipa ‘Grand Perfection’ is gloriously stripy and a happy sight at this time of year in the sight at this time of year in the veg patch. I’ve planned it so when the tulips are done the runner beans can slot in beside them. However, I do have to be strict as the balance between between edibles and non-edibles can get a bit skewed in favour of the flowers.

My father and I sowing broad beans with Mount Pirongia in the distance. I’ve always been a gardener - inspired by my grandmother and parents - all keen gardeners and plants-people. Growing up on a farm in New Zealand meant I was part of a culture of garden-making aided by a temperate climate and in my case, space. I have made gardens in every house I have lived in from childhood; including balconies in London, urban town gardens to large country gardens and at all times an allotment!
