🔥 Fire doors are there to protect lives, but only if they’re working correctly.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at some recent fire door remedial work following issues highlighted during a fire risk assessment.

The door had issues with the gaps and hinges, so we carried out a number of remedial works including:

🔧 Replacing the existing hinges with new 4-inch Grade 13 ball-bearing hinges.

🔧 Plugging the existing fixing holes where required and installing appropriate packing behind the hinge/fixing positions.

🔧 Routing and fitting an automatic drop-down seal to help close the gap at the bottom of the door when it shuts.

🔧 Adjusting the door and keep so that it closes and latches correctly.

🔧 Checking the gaps around the sides and top of the door to ensure they were within the recognised 2–4 mm range.

🔧 Checking the existing intumescent and smoke seals around the door.

🔧 Checking and testing the door closer to ensure the door closes fully and engages correctly.

The gap at the bottom of a fire door depends on the specific door, certification and smoke-control requirements, which is why the drop-down seal arrangement is particularly important.

Fire doors aren't just about the door itself — the gaps, hinges, seals, closer and ironmongery all need to work together correctly.

And yes… apparently I'm still Mr Happy 😂
