On the first week of every month we weigh all our cattle on farm, this is a big effort to get through all of them in a day here are a few pic of our under 150kg cattle weighed.

We have actually adopted the deer handling race for this job as can easily have over 100 head penned and ready to load through the scale, taking under 30 seconds each this keeps the stress on the animal to a minimum, but also give us a valuable chance to put hands on every calf as an individual and is invaluable for picking up some things that may go unnoticed on our daily stock walks!

All the data is collected automatically and input directly to our herd software which allows us to see how each calf is performing individually but also as a bunch on the whole, giving us key insights into the effects of nutritional changes and how events and routines on farm have affected the calves.

The best guide that we are doing our job well is an overall average daily gain figure (adg). This month we have had lots of new calves in and some nutritional changes so it was good to see that we are not too far behind our target of 0.85kg/day for the youngest calves over a mix of native, continental and Wagyu calves.

Ciara’s been out and about catching up with the cows and calves today. We don’t really have much to do with these guys other than making sure they are still there daily as the cows look after them so well, so it’s nice when you get a chance to have a good look through them!

The nanny cows have taken really well to this system, Edgar the bull is now running with them and we have had our first couple confirmed in calf this week.

These guys will be coming up for sale September time as 6-8 month olds, so if you’re looking for 20-30 well reared dairy x calves then please get in touch!

What a difference a day makes! We’ve finally caught some rain after over a month of dry, which isn’t something that happens very often here.

Luckily we finished up getting some fertiliser on on Friday just before the rain which should help us make the haylage for our calves transition diet!

When your neighbours dinner smells better than yours!

These guys are currently being weaned down off milk slowly to transition to a solid diet but this kid is not happy about it!

It was a family day out today Carlisle to buy this bunch of mainly British blue bull calves.

These guys have gone straight onto the auto feeder where they’ll get plenty of milk and as much feed as they fancy for the next few weeks.

We are still enjoying some cracking weather up here just now. Meaning we have been able to get lots of our young cattle out grazing in the sunshine.

There’s always more than one way to do a job!

On farm here we currently have 3 distinctly different ways of rearing calves at play, each with their own merits and issues!

1) The traditional suckled calf/ nanny cow. These calves have been adopted onto low yielding dairy cows. It requires a lot of work initially and good stockmanship to get going but once paired requires nearly no input (alongs the cows have plenty of grass) and the calves do fantastically as they can grab a drink whenever they fancy!

2) Ciara’s milk shed. Calves in pens of up to 10 fed via milk bars on milk replacer. Great for keeping and eye on new in calves or anything that requires a little tlc. Labour intensive and restricted feeding times but great for getting calves up to speed and ease of management!

3) Automatic milk feeder, each calf wears a RFID tag that scans against the milk feeder and they get a set allocation of milk daily, which can be accessed the same as a cow (whenever they desire) milk is always mixed consistently and available, there’s no competition whilst feeding and is super labour efficient, apart from the cleaning of the units. 1 person can feed and bed 120 calves in under a hour. The biggest downside of these machines is up to 30 calves share the same feed station, so if there’s an illness outbreak then it can spread rapidly.

Theres no one system that’s perfect but it’s nice to have flexibility!

We currently have a few batches of weanlings coming up for sale, please message if of interest!

Everyone meet Edgar! He’s the new kid on the block, and arrived this week from a cracking local herd of pedigree Angus’.

For us this year May is the beginning of the next season, with a cows gestation lasting roughly 9 months this will mean calves will start to be born around the beginning of February 2026.

We can wait to see how the calves turn out!
