This month marks 10 years of SM Decorating Services – and also 30 years in the decorating trade.
My journey began straight from college, starting an apprenticeship with Henry Boot in Featherstone before moving to their Leeds branch. Early on, I gained valuable experience working on high-end domestic properties in and around Carlton, Pontefract, which helped build both my technical skills and strong customer relationships.
After achieving my City & Guilds in Painting and Decorating, I spent several years working for a company in Rothwell. This involved travelling across the country, completing work on a variety of projects including retail units, well-known department stores, and high-end properties. I also had the opportunity to work on projects for the Thackray family in Leeds, including property renovations in Harrogate, as well as contributing to the transformation of Headingley Castle into residential flats. Alongside this, I worked on numerous new-build sites.
Although I later moved into full-time site work, it never gave me the same satisfaction. Tight deadlines often meant compromising on quality—something that didn’t sit right with me.
A turning point came 10 years ago when I broke my ankle and had time to reflect. During recovery, I decided to return to the type of work I truly enjoyed—where quality, pride, and customer satisfaction come first. I set up my page, shared my work and recommendations, and within weeks had a full month of bookings. I haven’t looked back since.
I’m incredibly grateful for the continued support from my family, loyal customers, and everyone who has recommended my services over the years. Whether you’ve used me regularly or just once, your support means everything and allows me to do a job I genuinely enjoy while providing for my family.
