No battery. A small inverter that never reaches your fuse box. No grid connection. Three reasons a portable solar panel will not do much for your bill long term.
To be fair to them, portable and plug-in kits do have a small built-in inverter. What they do not have is an inverter tied into your consumer unit, the fuse box that feeds every circuit in the house. So it offsets a socket, not a home.
No battery means the electricity is gone the second you stop drawing it. No grid connection means no Smart Export Guarantee payments, because those need MCS certification.
The Government's own estimate for an 800W plug-in solar kit is around £110 a year at the best angle, or £70 mounted vertically off a balcony (DESNZ, July 2026).
Grand for a caravan, an allotment or a power cut. Not a plan for the next twenty-five years.
A full solar and battery storage system has all three pieces. That is the entire difference.
