An old woodsman was once asked what he’d do with five minutes to fell a tree. His answer: spend the first half sharpening the axe.

The line usually gets pinned on Abraham Lincoln. He never said it. It came from the men doing the work.

We’ve swapped the axe for a chainsaw, but the principle stands. A sharp chain cuts cleaner, works safer and leaves a better finish on the tree. A blunt one means torn cuts, tired climbers and a slower job.

Preparation isn’t the bit before the work. It is the work.

Investing in our team 🚧

Yesterday two of our team completed and passed our Signing, Lighting and Guarding training, giving Tree Squadron the in-house capability to set up basic traffic management on our roadside tree works.

What that means for our clients: safer sites, faster mobilisation and fewer delays waiting on third parties, whether it’s highway tree work, roadside hedgerows or vegetation management.

A huge thank you to John Mayer at Arc Plant & Co for a superbly delivered course: clear, practical and well worth the day. We’ll be back.

A Wednesday on the road with Tree Squadron 🌳

149 miles. 11 sites. One van.

Started in Cyncoed, worked through Heath, Lisvane and Rhiwbina, nipped down to Swansea, back up to Risca and Newport, and home before five to pick the boys up from footy. ⚽

Every quote we give starts with boots on the ground. We don’t price trees from a photo. We come out, look properly, and tell you straight what the tree needs, to BS3998 standards.

Conservation area tree removal in the Vale of Glamorgan 🌳

Following a tree survey that recommended felling on safety grounds, and with agreement from the council, our team carried out a controlled sectional dismantle to bring this tree down safely.

The timber was cut to length and left on site for the client to use as firewood. The stump was ground out and all remaining debris cleared.

Willows pollarded, allotments stocked up 🌳

We speedlined sections straight to the chipper, used the tracked MEWP where access was tight, and climbed the rest. The trees have been pollarded and left to regenerate, and every bit of the arisings went back to the plot holders as chip and logs for the local authority’s allotment site.
