Project update | The Tower Hotel, London 📍

Works at The Tower Hotel are progressing across a major refurbishment programme, with our package covering dry lining and plastering across the hotel’s ensuite and bedroom spaces.

Four phases are now complete and handed over to the client, with 80 rooms delivered to date.

Our next phase is due to commence in October, with further rooms to follow as the programme continues.

For a project of this scale, consistency matters. From first fix through to finished spaces ready for decoration, the focus is on maintaining the same standard across every room, every phase and every handover.

Once the walls and ceilings are finished, you won't see any of this. And that's exactly why we photograph it.

The metal framing won't be visible at handover, but it's an important part of the work. Correct installation and strict adherence to the specification both influence how the system performs.

We're now capturing more of these hidden stages because we've improved the way we report and record our work on site, with more regular reporting and more frequent site photography.

It's helping us keep a closer eye on quality and making sure there's a clear record of the work throughout the project for both our teams and our clients.

Refurbishment: Buildings with Character.

Our work spans a broad range of projects, from modern commercial spaces with clean lines and open-plan layouts to refurbishment projects with plenty of history and character.

Working within these buildings brings a different set of challenges. Our teams work around the features and constraints that are already there, angled ceilings, unusual rooflines, original details and unexpected proportions, while integrating any new construction into the existing structure.

With the new academic year approaching, our works at Loughborough University are now complete, and the transformation of the new DigiLabs space is reaching its conclusion.

The pre-existing university buildings were a raw construction site when we first stepped onto the job. Now, they've been transformed into a forward-thinking, digitally centred environment designed to support innovation, collaboration and the people who will use it.

This is a preview of just one area of what was a sizable project. We've documented the journey from the early stages of construction, through the layers of our work, to the finished environment beginning to take shape.

We'll be sharing more from behind the scenes, along with an in-depth look at the full DigiLabs project in a case study on our website.

Project Insight: Tidbury Green Farm, Solihull 📍

A 17th-century farmhouse and collection of agricultural buildings are being transformed into The Mallard Pub, a new hospitality destination in Solihull.

Mellor & Co were appointed to deliver the plastering package across the development, which combines the original farm buildings with newly constructed elements to create a completely new use for the site.

Our works include plasterboarding, skimming, making good and detailed finishing around the retained features of the original buildings, including exposed timber structures and rounded details.

The challenge is creating a consistent finish that preserves and respects the existing fabric, while carrying that character through to the newly constructed areas.

Works are now well underway on site, with the plastering package progressing alongside the wider construction programme ahead of the pub's planned opening later this year.

Project Update: Swanshurst School, Birmingham 📍

A preview of the transformation that the newly constructed sports hall has undergone.

From bare blockwork and exposed steels through to internal spaces nearing completion, our team has delivered the drylining, plastering and ceiling works for this new facility.

With handover now approaching, we're looking forward to seeing the sports hall fully finished and decorated, ready to be enjoyed by the school's pupils and staff.

Projects are shaped by hundreds of decisions.
Design intent. System performance. Programme. Commercial risk.

As the appointed contractor, we're where all of those decisions have to come together in practice.

We don't just receive the specification, we take on the responsibility for delivering it.

Early involvement gives us the opportunity to combine our experience with information from across the supply chain: material availability, procurement routes, equivalent compliant systems, manufacturer guidance and the practical realities on site.

There are times when our perspective just confirms the original approach, but sometimes it identifies an alternative worth discussing.

Ultimately, the decision stays with the project team.
Our role is to bring useful information to the table while there's still time to act on it.

Back in May, Mellor & Co was appointed to deliver the dry lining and plastering package for an exclusive gated, 9-plot residential development in Shifnal.

Here's a look at the progress so far, from our pre-start survey through to insulation, boarding, surface preparation and the final plaster finish.

With two plots now complete, we look forward to sharing the finished results as the project continues.
