With the new academic year approaching, our works at Loughborough University are now complete, and the transformation of the new DigiLabs space is reaching its conclusion.

The pre-existing university buildings were a raw construction site when we first stepped onto the job. Now, they've been transformed into a forward-thinking, digitally centred environment designed to support innovation, collaboration and the people who will use it.

This is a preview of just one area of what was a sizable project. We've documented the journey from the early stages of construction, through the layers of our work, to the finished environment beginning to take shape.

We'll be sharing more from behind the scenes, along with an in-depth look at the full DigiLabs project in a case study on our website.

For now, though, credit goes to everyone involved in getting this one over the line.

Project Insight: Tidbury Green Farm, Solihull 📍

A 17th-century farmhouse and collection of agricultural buildings are being transformed into The Mallard Pub, a new hospitality destination in Solihull.

Mellor & Co were appointed to deliver the plastering package across the development, which combines the original farm buildings with newly constructed elements to create a completely new use for the site.

Our works include plasterboarding, skimming, making good and detailed finishing around the retained features of the original buildings, including exposed timber structures and rounded details.

The challenge is creating a consistent finish that preserves and respects the existing fabric, while carrying that character through to the newly constructed areas.

Works are now well underway on site, with the plastering package progressing alongside the wider construction programme ahead of the pub's planned opening later this year.

Project Update: Swanshurst School, Birmingham 📍

A preview of the transformation that the newly constructed sports hall has undergone.

From bare blockwork and exposed steels through to internal spaces nearing completion, our team has delivered the drylining, plastering and ceiling works for this new facility.

With handover now approaching, we're looking forward to seeing the sports hall fully finished and decorated, ready to be enjoyed by the school's pupils and staff.

Projects are shaped by hundreds of decisions.
Design intent. System performance. Programme. Commercial risk.

As the appointed contractor, we're where all of those decisions have to come together in practice.

We don't just receive the specification, we take on the responsibility for delivering it.

Early involvement gives us the opportunity to combine our experience with information from across the supply chain: material availability, procurement routes, equivalent compliant systems, manufacturer guidance and the practical realities on site.

There are times when our perspective just confirms the original approach, but sometimes it identifies an alternative worth discussing.

Ultimately, the decision stays with the project team.
Our role is to bring useful information to the table while there's still time to act on it.

Back in May, Mellor & Co was appointed to deliver the dry lining and plastering package for an exclusive gated, 9-plot residential development in Shifnal.

Here's a look at the progress so far, from our pre-start survey through to insulation, boarding, surface preparation and the final plaster finish.

With two plots now complete, we look forward to sharing the finished results as the project continues.

We start our projects with an ideal sequence.

Every visit has a clear objective, giving us, and the trades around us, the opportunity to carry out our works at the right time.

But what happens when projects don’t fit the mould?

Priorities shift. Information changes. Pressure increases. Sometimes the work fronts we planned for simply aren’t available.

Our focus has to shift from following the ideal sequence to responding to the current reality on site.

We ask the right questions before we mobilise, communicate early when circumstances change, and work with the site team to evaluate the options:

- Can we adjust labour?
- Can another work front be released?
- Can another stage of our package be brought forward?

Or sometimes, we confirm that sticking to the original plan is still the right decision.

The sequence gives us direction.
Sound operational decisions, when site conditions change, help keep the project moving.

Whilst dry lining is often associated with standard internal partitions, we also install jumbo systems for applications where conventional metal stud walls are not sufficient, helping to create full-height divisions in large commercial and industrial environments.
