Project Update: Swanshurst School, Birmingham 📍

Work continues at Swanshurst School, where our team is busy delivering the dry lining package for the new sports hall and ancillary facilities.

As the project progresses, the scale of the space is really starting to come into focus. Boarding, taping and finishing works are advancing well, with the same attention to detail being applied across both the main sports hall and ancillary areas.

Sports halls present a different challenge to more typical education projects. Rather than working solely across multiple smaller spaces, the majority of the work takes place in one large, open environment. Long wall runs and high-level details demand consistency from start to finish, because the quality is visible across every elevation at the same time.

When reviewing systems for a project, we look beyond material cost alone, also considering:

- Programme impact
- Buildability
- Installation efficiency
- Procurement options

To say we’re witnessing a transformation on this project would be an understatement.

As our work continues at Corus Hotel, we’ve been looking back at where we started and the contrast with the spaces that are now taking shape. It’s been great to see the vision coming together and to have played our part in the refurbishment of such a prominent hotel.

Earlier this year, Mellor & Co delivered the drylining and plastering works for this contemporary new-build development in Shropshire.

New Project Secured: Victoria Works Development, Shropshire ✔️

Mellor & Co has been appointed to deliver a package of drylining & plastering works for an exclusive 9-plot residential development in Shifnal.

The scheme includes 4 premium new build 3-bed houses, alongside the conversion of existing barns into 5 mews-style homes, creating a characterful new development for the market town.

Our works include:

- Acoustic wall systems
- Insulated ceiling systems
- Moisture resistant boarding

Reviewing our teams’ work across site visits lately, the quality has been consistently standing out. Not just a crisp plaster finish presented at handover, but the technical standard of the build-ups behind it.

We care about quality from the ground up, because the true performance of a system is hidden once the plaster goes on. The parts that disappear once the job is complete all play a role in how a wall or ceiling performs long-term.

Another site visit completed at Loughborough University this week. We’re now well into skim coat application throughout key areas, and finished sections are starting to emerge after a significant first phase of framing and boarding works.

Recent progress includes:
✔️ Corridors skimmed and moving toward completion
✔️ Ceiling works advancing across multiple sections
✔️ More rooms and spaces being closed up

With more areas of the project now heading toward completion, the scale and quality of this new learning space are becoming much clearer. More updates to follow as progress continues.

Often, it’s a starting point.

Before anything reaches site, there’s a window where decisions still matter.
Systems and manufacturers can be reviewed. Approaches can be refined. Better commercial and project outcomes can be achieved.

Project Update: Swanshurst School Sports Hall, Birmingham 📍

We’re on site delivering dry lining works for the new sports hall at Swanshurst School.

The structure is up, coreboard installed, with large areas now insulated and vapour sealed. Early progress has been strong, with our teams setting the project up right from the outset.

Our focus now is on maintaining momentum as coordination with other trades continues.
