MOOi is a RIBA Chartered Architecture practice based in Cambridge (UK) influenced by the principles and approach of Dutch design. Our name "mooi" [pronounced - moy] is the Dutch word for beautiful, amazing, wonderful...which is the feedback we strive for, with each and every project we undertake. The practice has a reputation for contemporary, sustainable design with extensive experience working o

n projects across a range of market sectors, including projects for The University of Cambridge and its Colleges, private residential new build and redesign commissions, multiple residency development projects and commercial offices. MOOi pride ourselves on being a practice able to respond intelligently to the needs of our clients and as such our design process is unique to each project we complete. Our studio is a creative work environment and our aim is to couple contemporary, innovative and elegant design with the project aspirations, budgets and time frames our clients have in mind. We have a genuine understanding of building methods and construction and this is reflected in our designs which incorporate sustainable materials and have an emphasis on clever and practical design and use solutions. Our design process always starts with meeting our clients face to face, listening to them and creating a well-developed understanding of their needs before producing considered and clear design solutions which bring their ideas to life. Pocket House | MOOi were appointed to design this compact one-bedroom property in the Mill Road Conservation Area,  , replacing an existing double garage.

Built using an innovative ICF (Insulated Concrete Formwork) construction, much of the work on site was carried out by the client in order to minimise costs. The modest 45sqm plan is strategically arranged over two storeys, partially sunken at ground floor to reduce the height of the dwelling.

The exterior is clad in locally sourced, handmade gault brick slips with a feature brown   roof. The muted palette of materials makes a subtle yet characterful addition to the urban street scene.

Completed MOOi Project | We are delighted to announce the practical completion of our latest MOOi project and we couldn’t wait to share a first glimpse of the results 🧡

Originally designed by the renowned architects Wells, Hickman & Partners in the 1960’s, this property sits within a modernist development with a forward-thinking emphasis on communal courtyards, wellbeing, and community. Our vision was to breathe new life into the property while carefully honouring its incredible architectural roots.

Here is a sneak peek at the bespoke kitchen crafted by the talented team at Tomas Kitchen Living. Taking cues from the home’s original exposed timber beams, we paired warm, natural materials with elegant fluted panelling + textured splashback tiles from Claybrook. The finish perfectly complements the character and material palette of the original house.

Beyond the kitchen, we have completely reimagined the ground floor, introducing a new extension, beautiful bespoke joinery, a dedicated new utility space + custom home cinema.

We are incredibly grateful to our wonderful clients for their unwavering trust in our vision and their fantastic collaboration throughout the process. A huge thank you also to Benchmark Building & Roofing for their hard work and exceptional craftsmanship in delivering this project!

Client Feedback | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

‘We worked with MOOi on a full renovation and large extension to our house and couldn’t be happier with the result. From the first conversation, they took the time to properly understand what we wanted and came back with design ideas that were thoughtful, practical and creative.

Throughout the build, they were responsive and quick to help us solve problems as they came up. They genuinely care about getting the details right, not just handing over drawings and moving on. We’d recommend MOOi without hesitation to anyone planning a project like ours!’

We love client   and are delighted with our   rating after completing this project.

Beat the heat in your home without relying on just another AC unit! ☀️

The default response to hotter summers is often air-conditioning, but at MOOi we believe the real solution is architectural. A home’s comfort shouldn’t depend on retrofitted systems—it should be built into the design itself.

Strapping AC onto a property is not addressing the root cause. It’s costly to run and increases energy consumption, fighting against the heat absorbed by poor design. Instead, let’s rethink how we build.

Our recently completed project in Riverside, Cambridge puts this philosophy into action:

- Highly insulated building envelope: Keeping the internal temperature stable.

- Feature projecting canopy: Provides crucial shade to rear sliding doors.

- Electrically operated roof lights: Designed to purge heat effectively in the evenings.

- UV blocking glass: Installed on south and west elevations to minimize solar gain in summer while retaining warmth during the winter.

Want to improve your home’s thermal performance? Here are a few accessible tips:

🛠️ Upgrading windows? Opt for UV-blocking glass on south/west-facing elevations. It’s a straightforward, economical investment.

☀️ Need a temporary fix? Use UV-blocking fabrics, window film, or external sail shades to stop the sun before it reaches the glass and radiates heat internally.

🌬️ Best practice: Keep windows and curtains closed during the heat of the day, and open them early in the morning or late at night to purge trapped heat.

At MOOi, we explore resilient design strategies from the very first sketch. If you’re ready to build a home that works with the climate, not against it, we’d love to help! 🧡

Completed MOOi Project | Before + After 🧡 We are delighted to receive the professional photos of our latest completed project in the Newnham Conservation Area  , perfectly captured by Matthew Smith  ⭐️

The proposals included a new side + rear extension to create a more spacious family kitchen and dining area, with a distinctive saw tooth roof form to maximise internal height and to maintain a continuous roof form extending through from the side infill return.

Externally the extension, bookended by flank walls in Cambridge Gault brickwork + clad with varied width burnt larch cladding in between, provides the perfect backdrop for the beautiful feature downpipes + hoppers, finished in “May Green” (RAL6017) 💚

The kitchen by deVOL Kitchens in “Bakehouse Green” with   accents complements the extension perfectly!

On Site | A sunny site visit at our central Cambridge project last week! ☀️🏗️

The glazing is now installed and is perfectly complemented by the Ashington Red Multi brickwork by Wienerberger. The texture from its grey tones and indented detailing looks absolutely fantastic 🧡

As part of a wider update to this property we incorporated a newly converted loft space with rear facing dormer, featuring exposed ceiling rafters to add a sense of height and articulation to the room.

The real showstopper… the feature freestanding slipper bath positioned perfectly with a garden view 🌳

Our creative design process is all about collaborating with our clients, to bring their dream projects to life and create considered, contemporary spaces which fit both their current and future needs …
