Chelsea Flower Show week always gets people thinking about gardens and the possibilities for our own outdoor spaces.

This image was taken in my RHS award winning show garden, Four Season Sanctuary. A garden designed to feel calm, immersive and natural, with strong architectural structure softened by naturalistic planting.

For me, the best gardens are not simply beautiful to look at. They are places you genuinely want to spend time in.

I’ll also be visiting Chelsea this week and catching up with the RHS. It is always inspiring seeing new ideas, materials and planting combinations, although I still believe the best gardens are the ones that feel personal and connected to the people who use them.

One of my favourite views from my RHS Hampton Court show garden.

This garden explored something that sits at the heart of my work, creating gardens with strong architectural structure, softened through naturalistic planting and a more immersive connection to nature.

I believe gardens do not need to feel overly formal to feel refined. Thoughtful structure, layered planting and natural materials can create spaces that feel calm, timeless and deeply connected to the landscape.

As an RHS award winning garden designer, my aim is always to create gardens with depth, atmosphere and longevity, spaces that settle beautifully over time and support wildlife and pollinators.

Based near Cambridge, I design bespoke gardens across Cambridgeshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and surrounding areas.

Recently completed garden in Hadley Wood, Hertfordshire.

This reclaimed cobbled pathway was designed to slow the experience of moving through the garden, creating a stronger sense of depth, enclosure and atmosphere as the space gradually unfolds.

Layered fern planting softens the edges of the hard landscaping, while clipped evergreen structure and mature tree canopies provide year round framework and balance throughout the scheme.

At Tim Jennings Design, I’m always interested in combining strong architectural structure with naturalistic, wildlife friendly planting to create gardens that feel calm, immersive and connected to their surroundings.

One of the things I always aim to create in a garden is a sense of immersion and atmosphere, where naturalistic planting and strong architectural structure work together as one cohesive space.

This RHS award winning garden was designed to feel calm, layered and connected to its surroundings, combining contemporary outdoor living with wildlife friendly planting and carefully framed views through the landscape.

A quieter corner from my RHS Hampton Court show garden.

Not designed to impress at first glance, but to draw you in. A place to sit, with structure doing its job quietly in the background while the planting softens, moves, and slowly takes over.

These are the spaces I find people connect with most. Not overly styled, not overworked. Just well considered, with enough strength to hold everything together and enough looseness to let the garden breathe.

It’s also how I approach my client work. Creating gardens that feel calm, natural, and effortless, but are carefully structured underneath.

There’s something very satisfying about planting that feels calm, immersive, and quietly alive.

This is a style I come back to time and again. A naturalistic mix of perennials and grasses, but carefully composed so it holds together and feels intentional rather than wild.

It’s not about creating something overly designed or showy. It’s about atmosphere, balance, and a garden that settles into its surroundings.

When it’s done well, you don’t immediately see the design. You feel it.

This is very much at the heart of how I approach garden design across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire.

A quiet moment, held within structure.
Peonies just beginning to open, set within a naturalistic planting scheme designed for longevity, balance and seasonal rhythm.
Nothing here is accidental — every layer considered, yet allowed to feel effortless.
Gardens that evolve.
Gardens that endure.

There is something quietly magical about this moment in a garden.

The soft umbels of achillea floating beneath the deep crimson dots of sanguisorba. Grasses weaving through the planting and catching the light as they move in the breeze.

Planting like this can look wonderfully natural and effortless, but it is very carefully designed. Texture, height, movement and seasonal rhythm all have to work together so that the garden feels immersive, beautiful and alive with wildlife.

Spring is the time when many people begin to look at their gardens differently.

The structure of the space becomes clearer again, plants start to emerge, and the possibilities for change suddenly feel exciting.

It is also the ideal time to begin a garden design. Starting in spring allows us to explore ideas properly and plan a garden that will develop beautifully through the seasons ahead.

If you have been thinking about transforming your garden this year, feel free to get in touch.
I design naturalistic gardens with strong architectural structure across Cambridge and the surrounding countryside.

Sometimes the character of a garden is revealed in the smallest details.

Here, weathered corten steel, warm timber and water worn pebbles sit alongside naturalistic planting, creating a quiet moment where strong architectural form meets living landscape.

This detail is taken from my RHS award winning show garden beside the quay, where the design explored the relationship between structure, materials and planting rooted in nature.

Gardens should feel crafted, but also alive. Over time the materials deepen in tone, the planting softens the edges, and the space begins to settle naturally into its surroundings.

A quiet moment in the garden.

One of the qualities I often aim to create in a garden is a sense of calm and balance. Strong structure provides the underlying framework, while naturalistic planting brings movement, texture and seasonal change.

When these elements work together, a garden begins to feel immersive and connected to its surroundings.
