**Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham**

Supporting a wider commitment from the Department of Health and Social Care, have now completed their collaborative works with with VINCI Building UK to remove RAAC at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

RAAC is a lightweight building material used widely in public buildings between the 1960s and 1980s. It has since been shown to have a limited lifespan, presenting safety concerns. The Queen Elizabeth is one of 19 hospitals were eradication of the material was identified with works underway.

undertook the following activities and installed these products and systems a section at a time across approximately 600m2:

~ Removed existing RAAC substrate
~ Installed TATA D100 metal decking with12mm thick CP board
~ Rockwool Hardrock insulation
~ IKO Single Ply Waterproofing system
~ New free-standing non-penetrative guardrail system
~ Replaced all cappings

As you can see from the photos the final section looks great!

This is definitely a project that the team should be super proud of their achievements on. The inherent risk of removing RAAC material not only to themselves but to staff and visitors of the hospital was significant. The works were carried out by our highly trained and competent team who meticulously planned and completed these works.

Well done to all involved 👏

**Why No Falls Week matters**

Falls from height are still consistently the leading cause of workplace fatalities in the UK.

Latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive show that 35 people lost their lives at work due to a fall from height in 2024/25.

Falls from height were responsible for 28% of all workplace deaths (this proportion was 25% in 2021/22, 30% in 2022/23, and rising to 36% in 2023/24).

Shocking statistics we are sure you will agree!

are presently working for and in collaboration with Willmott Dixon on a long term project in the Midlands. They were approached by the site management team to support No Falls Week as part of a nationwide initiative.

' site management team have certainly lead by example and last week conducted the following to raise awareness to assist in developing a good safety culture surrounding working at height:

~ Er****on of a mock tower with intentional faults to support a training session to identify hazards
~ Toolbox Talk for working at height
~ Working at height Quiz

The event was a great success with the full site team fully engaged.

Thanks and appreciation was received from Willmott Dixon's Construction Manager who said:

"Thank you for today's efforts. It was a positive and well executed event with your talk about falls, the quiz, and the mock tower test. It was clearly engaging for your workforce and will hopefully raise awareness on prevention and protection from falls going forward.

Great ALD team effort! Thanks to you all for taking such a proactive approach to no falls week."

We would like to acknowledge the support from as well as special mention to our own site team who put considerable effort into this event to maximise positive impact. Thank you!

Finally, congratulations to the winner of the WaH quiz, Aretm Voroneskyi, who can be seen receiving his Amazon voucher as a thank you for taking part!
