The temperature has definitely dropped this week. I’m out in my new work jacket and, although it’s getting colder, there’s still SO much to do in the garden at this time of year!

Autumn gardening is far from slowing down. There’s lots to do, planting, pruning, moving, dividing, cutting back, clearing, getting gardens ready for winter… the list goes on!

So, layers on and out we go !!

Dalias doing their thing this morning!! A welcome sight on a wet day.

One of those flowers that really comes into its own as the garden starts to head towards autumn.

Big, beautiful bold blooms in all these gorgeous shades of coral, orange, red and pink. brilliant for adding a proper hit of colour when so many other plants are starting to fade.

how can you not love a flower this ridiculously full of petals?
And the best bit? The more you cut them, the more they flower, so they’re brilliant for bringing indoors too.
Autumn colour at its best!

Choisya ternata aka Mexican orange blossom an often overlooked hero of the garden

Hardy, bright, easy to maintain and when those flowers appear… it smells like absolute heaven.

Evergreen, full of glossy foliage and beautiful little white flowers, it’s one of those plants that quietly gets on with it and looks good all year round.

Definitely deserves a bit more love!

A little reminder that autumn doesn’t mean the gardening is over for the year.

There’s still SO much to do and plant at this time of year.

Your veg beds don’t need to sit empty over winter. There are plenty of crops that can be planted now and left to grow through the colder months. Cabbages, kale, lettuce(yesl lettuce in winter 😝) onions, garlic and more.

Or plants some green manure, it’s a great way to keep your soil covered over winter, help suppress weeds, protect the soil from the elements and add organic matter back in.

Autumn is also a great time for planting trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and bare-root plants, while the soil is still warm and there’s plenty of moisture around.

So don’t pack away the gardening gloves just yet… there’s still plenty to do x

The struggle is real… one minute they’re in my hand, the next I’m searching the entire garden like I’ve never owned a pair of secateurs in my life.

Everyone meet Dot, One of my very first customers, and now a very good friend.

What started as me coming to help in her garden has turned into something I honestly didn’t expect. We garden together, have such a good laugh, put the world to rights and drink A LOT of tea… usually with a biscuit or two thrown in!
Dot is still very much involved in her garden, and I love that we do it together. Sometimes I’m there to do the jobs Dot can’t manage anymore, sometimes we just potter about and decide what needs doing next.

It’s customers like Dot who remind me that gardening is about so much more than gardens. It’s people, conversations, friendship and the little bit of time spent together.

Its a privilege to have met her and to be able to help keep her garden thriving x GardeningWithPurpose
