🚧 PROJECT UPDATE | 650m² OF CONCRETE GROUNDWORKS – ST ALBANS

Surrey Groundworks & Civil Engineering Ltd are pleased to be on site at a Biffa depot in St Albans, assisting the principal contractor with a substantial concrete groundwork package to provide a durable surface for their HGVs and operational vehicles.

The project involves approximately 650m² of new concrete hardstanding, with works progressing from site preparation and setting out through to reinforcement, shuttering and concrete placement.

We’re proud to be supporting the wider project team and helping deliver the groundwork package to the required standard.

🌧️ What is a Hydro Brake & Why Does It Matter?

We’ve just completed the installation of a hydro brake flow control system on this project — a key part of modern drainage design.

So what does it actually do?

👉 A hydro brake is designed to control the rate that rainwater leaves a site.
Instead of water rushing straight into the public sewer during heavy rainfall, it restricts the flow to a safe, agreed discharge rate.

Why is that important?

✔️ Prevents overloading local drainage systems
✔️ Reduces risk of flooding downstream

Progress like this speaks for itself 🚧

Plots 2, 3 & 4 are now fully complete and ready to be handed over to the bricklayers — a solid bit of progress on this development 👷‍♂️

With the substructure works wrapped up, we now move into the next phase:

• Installation of the attenuation tank
• Installation of the hydro brake system
• Running surface water connections down to the main road
• Excavation of the drive to formation level
• Laying clean limestone sub-base
• Installing sacrificial blockwork to form the drive and parking bays
• Laying 70–80mm base tarmac, preparing for permeable paving at a later stage

The job is moving forward exactly how it should — well organised, on schedule, and built right from the ground up.
