It's hard to know who to trust these days.

They go through your complaints history, take references from customers you have already worked for and a lot more.

Three tubs of sticks and soil. All of it out of one chimney.

Jackdaws drop twigs down the pot until one wedges, then build on top of it. Over a summer it adds up to this. The second photo is where it was sat.

The bit worth knowing: from the room, that fireplace looked completely normal. You can't see up a flue from a hearth, so almost nobody finds out until it's too late.

If your pot hasn't been lit since spring, it's worth a look before you light it.

Sheets down first either way, so none of it touches your carpet.

Nobody thinks about their chimney in August. Then the cold starts creeping in and everyone remembers at once.

I know because my diary gets booked solid in about a fortnight, every year, the moment the schools go back.

So this is the easy window. Your chimney's been sat there since March collecting last winter's soot, and if the pot's open there's a fair chance a jackdaw has been building in it all summer. Getting it done now costs you the same as getting it done in October, except now you pick the day.

Right now I've got room in my diary, I cover 30 miles around Bury St Edmunds. Sheets down, vacuum on, insurance certificate in your hand before I leave. HETAS qualified, Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps.

🪵 Buying logs for winter? Now is the moment.

• Kiln-dried: usually 10–18% moisture, ready to burn, costs more
• Seasoned: quality varies enormously — check with a moisture meter, aim for under 20%
• Anything above 20% wastes heat and lines your flue with tar
• Buy in August/September and you'll pay less than in the December scramble
• Store it off the ground, covered on top, open at the sides

Dry wood means more heat, less soot, and a chimney that stays in better shape.

❓ Choosing a chimney sweep? Five questions worth asking:

1. Are you insured? (Public liability — always ask.)
2. Do you issue a certificate after the sweep?
3. Will you do a smoke draw test?
4. Which sweeping method do you use, and will you check the whole flue?
5. What does the price include — any extras?

A good sweep will be happy to answer all five. If someone dodges them, that tells you something.

Creosote is a highly flammable, tar-like deposit in a chimney. A number of factors affect the composition of creosote, such as:

🪵 species and moisture content of the wood being burned
🔥 appliance size and operation
🎩 characteristics of the chimney and flue system
☀️ environmental conditions

🧹 People are often surprised by how much comes out of a chimney that's had one winter's use.

A regularly used wood burner can leave a good few kilos of soot and tar in the flue over a season. It builds up quietly, narrows the flue and it's what catches light in a chimney fire.

You won't see it from the room. That's rather the point of an annual sweep — it goes out in my bags instead of staying in your chimney.
