⚠️ Extension lead plugged into another extension lead?

We’ve probably all done it at some point — but it’s not a good idea!

🔌 Daisy-chaining extension leads makes it much easier to overload the first lead in the chain, potentially causing the plug, cable or connections to overheat.

🔥 Add high-powered appliances or a coiled extension reel into the mix and the risk increases.

Simple rule: if you regularly need an extension lead for your extension lead… you probably need another socket! 😄⚡

Can't recommend this guy enough for freeing up my shoulder.

💡 A few lighting upgrades close to home today!

This job was on Stoddens Road in Burnham-on-Sea, only a couple of minutes from me.

The old outside security lights had definitely seen better days, so they were removed and replaced with new fittings. I also upgraded the old en-suite downlights and replaced the decorative lights on the extension.

Nothing complicated — just a nice selection of small electrical jobs making a noticeable difference. 👍⚡

🔥 Electric heating upgrade on Burnham-on-Sea seafront

A nice local job today replacing three older electric heaters for a customer on the seafront in Burnham-on-Sea.

The property relies on electric heating, so the customer wanted to get rid of the old units and bring things up to date.

I removed the existing heaters and installed:

⚡ A Dimplex Quantum storage heater
⚡ A Rointe electric radiator
⚡ A Zennor electric towel radiator in the bathroom

Three different types of electric heater, each suited to what was needed in that particular room.

The finished installation looks much more modern and, most importantly, the customer was delighted with the upgrade.

⚡ Fault finding in Brean – and this one definitely needs more than a quick repair!

I was called to a property in Brean where the sockets and lighting in an extension were tripping and simply wouldn't stay on.

The owners are currently preparing the house for sale and wanted to get a number of electrical issues sorted.

As soon as I started investigating, something stood out.

Much of the extension had been wired using white flexible cable – the sort of cable you'd normally associate with an extension lead – rather than appropriate fixed wiring cable.

There were different bits of cable used throughout, junction boxes hidden away and, importantly, some of the cable was significantly undersized for the circuit protection supplying it.

Testing eventually revealed a dead short between conductors.

At that point, even if I could have located the exact damaged section and temporarily got everything working again, I wasn't prepared to leave an installation like this in service. There were simply too many fundamental problems with the way it had originally been wired.

My concern is that some of the wiring may have been subjected to excessive current/overheating while being inadequately protected. We'll know more when the old wiring is removed.

The extension appears to have worked for years before the problems finally showed themselves – which is a good reminder that "it's always worked" doesn't necessarily mean an electrical installation is safe.

We're returning in a couple of weeks to rewire the extension properly, with correctly selected cables, circuit protection and accessible connections, helping the owners get another major issue sorted before the house sale.

⚡ From no electrics… to a fully powered garage! 🔌💡

This garage had no electrical supply at all, so the customer wanted it made much more usable with proper lighting and sockets.

I installed:

💡 Garage lighting
🔌 New socket outlets
⚡ Dedicated garage consumer unit with RCD protection
🛠️ A new electrical supply to the garage

The interesting part was getting the supply there.

Running the cable by the usual route would have meant digging up the existing path, which we obviously wanted to avoid if possible.

Instead, I installed a section of Unistrut above the gate to properly support the cable as it crossed over to the garage. As well as giving us a neat and secure route, the metal support also helps prevent premature collapse of the cable in the event of a fire.

A bit of thought saved a lot of unnecessary disruption — and the customer now has a properly powered, much more useful garage. 👍
