Today's job 😂 Stripping out two valleys because the previous roofer has rolled out one continuous 6m length of lead down the valley… and surprise surprise, it's split! 🤦‍♂️

I'd seen people doing this on TikTok and assumed it was a joke. Turns out it's actually a thing! 😂

Some things you just can't make up! 🏠🔨

🏠 A RE ROOF & LEADWORK 🔨

This roof is being completely re-tiled, changing from the old existing Double Roman tiles to Sandtoft Cassius tiles.

The existing leadwork was showing signs of splitting and would not have provided sufficient cover lap for the new roof.

The existing back gutter also only had around 100mm of lead up the roof, Its job is to collect and direct rainwater away from the chimney, so rather than simply reusing the old leadwork, we replaced it properly.

We:

🔨 Removed the existing Double Roman tiles
🏠 Re-tiled the full roof using Sandtoft Cassius tiles
⚒️Welded a new lead apron
⚒️ Installed new cover flashings
🔨 Welded a completely new back gutter
✨ Finished the chimney stack with stepped lead flashings
👌 Carefully dressed and finished all the leadwork with panatation oil
Good leadwork isn't just about making it look neat, the correct cover, falls, joints and detailing are all important to ensure the roof is properly water tight and built to last.

Another roof where the details matter. 👌

S**t Roofing Episode 13: The Jenga Stack 🧱🪵
Just when you think you’ve seen it all in the loft space, a whole chimney stack comes along balancing on sheer luck and prayer.
Whoever removed the chimney breast downstairs decided proper structural steel beams or gallows brackets were far too overrated. Instead, they tossed a single noggin between the joists and propped hundreds of kilos of solid brickwork off it with a couple of flimsy bits of 3x2 timber. 🤯💥
No RSJ, no calculation, no structural support—just timber props holding up a death trap directly over someone’s ceiling.
One bad storm, a little bit of timber rot, or a hard knock, and the entire stack comes crashing straight through the floor. Unbelievable levels of dangerous cowboy work. 🤠

🏠 It's all in the detail, Bay Roof in Gilberdyke🔨

👷‍♂️This job perfectly highlights why true craftsmanship and details matter.

🌧️This was an old felt bay roof that had reached the end of its life. The upstand and the existing lead flashing only just met each other, with no proper cover between the two, leaving a potential route for water to get behind and cause damage. Thankfully, the drip detail in the render had helped prevent rainwater getting into the gaps.

🔨Rather than simply covering it back up, we stripped the roof back and rebuilt the detail properly.
We added firrings to create a suitable fall, installed a new OSB deck, and then got to work on the lead.
The centre of the roof was finished with a traditional mop roll detail, with Code 5 lead carefully dressed and welded to create a neat, continuous and properly weathered finish.

👌Across the front, we finished the leadwork with a scallop and roll detail, with each section carefully formed by hand.
And then came the finishing touches...
🦔 Two cast lead hedgehogs, adding a little character to the finished roof.

This is the sort of work where taking your time matters. Getting the falls right, forming the lead correctly, making the joints neat and secure, and finishing the decorative details properly all make a difference.

That’s what we love about roofing — doing the practical job properly while taking pride in the craftsmanship that people can see. 👌

S**t Roofing Episode 12: Basic Maths Has Left The Building 📐📏

Always make sure your ridge tiles are actually going to fit before you batten and tile an entire roof!

It’s basic roofing maths: 50mm overhang into the gutter, 75mm tile cover at the apex for the ridge. How someone managed to mess that up is beyond me. 🤦‍♂️

Instead of setting the gauge properly from the start, they ran it all the way to the top course straight up, leaving zero clearance for the ridge tiles to sit correctly. 📐💥

To make matters worse, the whole roof was leaking like a sieve. I had to strip the entire roof, pull up all the valleys because the underlay/felt was completely missing, and re-gauge the whole deck just so the ridges could actually go on.
A massive job to undo someone's complete refusal to use a tape measure or basic underlayment. 🤠

S**t Roofing Episode 11: Try Your Best, Flashband the Rest 🩹✨

Yet another EPDM shared flat roof, and yet another complete head-scratcher when it comes to joining up with the neighbor's existing roof line.

Why build a proper raised timber detail or install suitable joint flashing when you can just unroll a massive strip of sticky tin foil? 🤦‍♂️

They’ve literally slapped a length of Flashband straight across the party wall seam—and even wrapped it up around the soil pipe vent for good measure! It’s already lifting, peeling, and completely failing.

Flashband is supposed to be a temporary emergency patch at best, not the permanent transition detail on a brand-new rubber roof. Absolute cowboy special. 🤠

S**t Roofing Episode 10: The Short Drip ✂️💧

Hitting double digits in the series, and the standard of detail keeps dropping!

Here we have a flat roof edge where they couldn't even be bothered to measure twice and cut once. The edge profile was cut way too short—it doesn't even make it to the gutter, leaving a massive gap wide open to the elements. 🤦‍♂️

To top it off, the end wasn't sealed, capped, or finished in any way. It's effectively serving as a wide-open funnel for rainwater to run straight underneath the membrane, behind the fascia, and right down the brickwork. 🌧️🏠

Measuring a trim isn't hard, but apparently, finishing a detail properly was just too much to ask. 🤠

S**t Roofing Episode 9: Right Kit, Terrible Ex*****on 🛠️🤦‍♂️

Following on from our EPDM termination bar chat... even when these cowboys actually buy the right kit, they still find a way to completely ruin it.

Yet another shared dormer roof. Instead of fixing to the party wall line, they just waltzed a whole 18 inches over the boundary and screwed the termination bar straight through the neighbor's roof! 🎯💥
Just the bar too, they forgot to apply the sealant that goes with it.

Punctuating a neighboring deck with a row of screw holes is one way to guarantee a neighbor dispute—and a massive leak.

EPDM really isn't a great choice for shared dormer roofs in the first place, but if you are using it, basic boundary measurements are usually step one. Absolute shocker. 🤠

S**t Roofing Episode 8: The Shared Dormer Disaster 🏠🛏️

You’ve got EPDM rubber on your side of the shared dormer roof, and next door decides to get a brand-new felt roof. How do the roofers join the two systems together properly?
A) A timber divider roll with proper flashings
B) A raised party-wall upstand
C) A mechanical termination bar
D) Just slice into your roof with a 20mm overlap and smear some silicone over it

Yep, they went with D. 🤦‍♂️

To make matters even worse, the whole roof actually slopes back towards the house, creating a massive puddle right in the middle—exactly where they slapped their bodged silicone join. 🌊

Nothing says "watertight guarantee" quite like standing water sitting over cheap mastic on a party wall boundary. Absolute madness. 🤠

🏠 Here is Josh getting the new lead ready for the valleys on this house today. 🔨

The existing valley had split in several places and we are pretty sure this was made from a lighter Code 3 lead. It was also missing a welt - a folded edge formed in the lead to help improve the weathering and keep water where it should be. Altho not every lead valley needs one, this particular one does. To make matters worse the lead wasn't wide enough to provide enough lead coverage up the valley.

For the replacement, we used Code 5 lead — a thicker, heavier grade of lead that's commonly used for valley work and other areas where the lead has to deal with a greater flow of water.

⚒️Taking the time to measure, cut and prepare everything properly in the first place so the finished leadwork is neat, secure and designed to do its job properly is so important, even before it goes on the roof.
It’s often the details you don’t notice that make the biggest difference to how a roof performs. 🏠👌
