🐛 Leatherjacket treatment season is here! 🌱

Now is the optimum time to consider leatherjacket control, with Syngenta identifying around 20th October as the key target date for autumn treatment.

Leatherjackets are the soil-dwelling larvae of daddy longlegs flies. They feed on grass roots and can cause significant lawn damage, leaving areas thinning, yellowing and eventually dying back. Birds and badgers digging for the grubs can cause further disruption.

Following this summer’s prolonged drought, many lawns are already under stress, making it even more important to protect turf health and support recovery.

At Lawn Feeder, we can assess your lawn for signs of leatherjacket activity and advise on suitable treatment options to help protect your investment.

📩 Concerned about leatherjackets in your lawn? Get in touch to discuss your options before the autumn treatment window passes.

🌱 A smarter approach to lawn renovation: targeted repairs.

When managing large lawns, a full renovation isn’t always necessary. Sometimes, the best results come from identifying the areas that need attention and focusing the work where it will make the biggest difference — saving the client money while preserving the healthy grass that’s already there.

This 2,000m² lawn in Sandholme is a great example. Much of the lawn is in excellent condition, but the prolonged summer drought had taken its toll on certain areas, leaving around 250m² of dead grass in need of repair.

Rather than renovating the entire property unnecessarily, we devised a targeted renovation plan to restore the damaged areas and help them blend seamlessly into the surrounding lawn.

The result? A more cost-effective approach that addresses the problem areas while making the most of the healthy lawn already in place.

At Lawn Feeder, we believe good lawn care is about choosing the right solution for each property — not simply carrying out the biggest job. 🌿

🌱 Sometimes, the best way to restore a lawn is to start again.

When thatch builds up too thickly, it can prevent water, air and nutrients from reaching the soil effectively. In severe cases, scarifying and overseeding simply won’t be enough to achieve the results you’re looking for.

This lawn in Willerby is a perfect example. The thatch layer was too extensive to recover effectively, so the best solution was to remove the existing lawn using a turf cutter and start fresh with a new lawn grown from seed.

By preparing the ground properly and starting with a clean slate, we can establish a healthier, denser lawn.
Sometimes, knowing when to start again is just as important as knowing how to renovate. 👌

The back lawn however had low thatch so we opted for our usual renovation process to revive this lawn.

🌿 Every lawn is different. That’s why we assess the condition of each lawn before recommending the best approach, whether that’s renovation or starting from scratch.

The goal is always the same: to create a healthy, high-quality lawn built to last.

A closer look at one of our latest autumn lawn renovations 🌱

A walk around this renovation, where we’ve once again opted for Johnsons J 4Turf sports seed for long-term performance.

Following the prolonged summer drought, we’re seeing first-hand how important seed selection is when renovating lawns. With much of the finer fescue grasses struggling to cope with the extended dry conditions, we’re choosing a more resilient approach.

J 4Turf features tetraploid perennial ryegrass, offering excellent disease resistance, improved drought tolerance and deep rooting. These qualities make it an excellent choice for helping lawns recover, establish quickly and better withstand future periods of challenging weather.

For us, renovations are about making informed decisions on seed selection and renovation techniques to deliver a lawn that performs throughout the seasons.

Smarter seed selection. Long-term results.

💧 Poor drainage? The solution starts beneath the surface. 🌱

New-build lawns can often present a challenge. Clay-heavy soils, construction compaction and poor soil structure can all contribute to standing water and slow drainage.

One treatment we use to help improve soil conditions is liquid gypsum.

🧪 It works through a process called flocculation, gypsum helps fine clay particles bind together into larger aggregates. In suitable soils, this can improve soil structure and help water move more freely through the root zone.

🌿 Why consider liquid gypsum?
• Supports better soil structure in suitable clay soils.
• Can help improve water infiltration where soil structure is the limiting factor.
• Helps create more favourable conditions for healthy root development.
• Offers a different approach to traditional mechanical aeration.

Unlike aeration, which physically penetrates the ground to relieve compaction, liquid gypsum works chemically within the soil. Depending on the conditions, it may be used as an alternative approach or alongside other soil improvement methods.

One important thing to remember: not all drainage problems have the same cause. Severe compaction, underlying ground conditions and inadequate drainage may require a different solution.

At Lawn Feeder, we look beyond the surface to understand what your lawn really needs — because a healthier lawn starts with healthier soil. 🌱

A large-scale lawn renovation in Brough 🌱

Tasked with reviving 1,300m² of lawns at this beautiful property on Cave Road, Brough.

Following our renovation process, we’ve carried out heavy scarification to remove accumulated thatch and dead material, followed by aeration to relieve compaction and encourage stronger root development.

Choosing the right seed for long-term resilience:

Following this summer’s severe drought, much of the fescue grass in these lawns had unfortunately been lost. With long-term resilience in mind, we’ve overseeded with Johnsons J 4Turf 50, from the Johnsons Sports Seed range.

This specialist blend features DLF's 4turf® tetraploid perennial ryegrass, offering excellent disease resistance, improved drought tolerance and deep rooting. These characteristics are particularly valuable when building a lawn better equipped to cope with future dry spells, while helping reduce reliance on irrigation and fertiliser.

The aim is not simply to restore the lawn’s appearance, but to establish a stronger, denser and more resilient sward that performs throughout the seasons.

Now it’s over to nature, with consistent aftercare and the right growing conditions helping these lawns develop into the finish this beautiful property deserves.

Another Lawn Feeder renovation focused on quality, resilience and long-term results.
