📰 Featured in Premier Construction News 📰

We're proud to see our work on the Tamworth Castle Gateway Project featured in the latest edition of Premier Construction News.

Built over 1,000 years ago, Tamworth Castle is one of the town's most important historic landmarks. This regeneration project has reconnected the Castle with the town centre, both physically and visually, creating a welcoming route that respects the site's heritage while improving accessibility for thousands of visitors each year.

Working alongside Speller Metcalfe, Glazzard Architects, and Tamworth Borough Council, we were appointed to deliver the civil and structural engineering design services for the scheme, alongside engineering works to the surrounding buildings and landscaping.

Our role included designing the new bridge structure, supporting the surrounding public realm works, and preserving the historic bridge supports. Working closely with the wider project team and Historic England, we helped deliver engineering solutions that protected the site's historic fabric while creating a safe, accessible route linking Tamworth Castle, the Town Hall and St Editha's Church.

A huge thank you to Premier Construction News for featuring this fantastic project and to all of our project partners who helped bring Tamworth Borough Council's vision to life.

Recently, our management team successfully completed Mental Health First Aid training with Safe Haven, passing their written assessments and strengthening their ability to support colleagues both in and out of the workplace.

As we recognise Men's Mental Health Week, it's an important reminder that mental wellbeing matters. Creating an environment where people feel supported, listened to, and able to ask for help is something we take seriously.

A big thank you to Safe Haven for delivering such valuable training and helping us continue to build a positive and supportive workplace culture.

Case Study: Telecoms Base Jacking & Re-Levelling

When a legacy telecoms equipment cabin began to experience significant settlement due to poor ground conditions, the initial solution was to remove the structure entirely and install a new piled foundation.

Our specialist foundation team identified a more efficient alternative.

Using Shire's patented micro pile and jacking head system, we were able to re-level and stabilise the existing foundation in situ, avoiding the need for full removal and replacement.

The solution allowed piling and jacking works to be completed with minimal service outages, keeping the site operational throughout the majority of the programme while delivering significant cost and time savings for the operator.

✔ Reduced service disruption
✔ Faster project delivery
✔ Significant cost savings
✔ Sustainable reuse of existing assets
✔ Long-term structural stability

This project demonstrates how innovative engineering and specialist foundation solutions can provide smarter, more sustainable outcomes for critical telecoms infrastructure.

📡 Innovative Telecoms Foundation Remediation 📡

Shire Telecom was recently appointed by Circet to deliver a remedial foundation solution for a legacy Midi equipment cabin affected by long-term settlement caused by poor ground conditions.

Initial proposals anticipated a full cabin removal and replacement piled foundation. However, Shire’s specialist foundation team developed an alternative, value-engineered solution using our patented Shire micro pile and jacking head system to successfully re-level the existing foundation in situ.

By avoiding full replacement works, Shire was able to minimise service outages, maintain site operation for the majority of the project, and deliver significant cost savings for the Operator — all while restoring long-term structural stability.

A fantastic example of how innovative engineering and specialist contracting can redefine what’s possible within the telecoms sector.

🎓 Supporting Future Design Talent for 16 Years 🎓

Shire is proud to continue its long-standing partnership with Heart of Worcester College as part of their Foundation Degree in Digital Media and Games Design.

Now in our 16th year, we’re delighted to support students by assessing their end-of-year project submissions — and once again, the creativity, technical ability, and innovation on display continue to impress.

Each year, students are challenged to interpret a live project brief: designing an annex building within the grounds of Shire UK’s headquarters in Bromsgrove, culminating in detailed design proposals and immersive fly-through presentations.

It’s always inspiring to see fresh perspectives brought to real-world design challenges, and we’re proud to play a small part in helping nurture the next generation of creative professionals.

🌱 The King’s School Carbon Off-Setting Project – Part Three: Build 🌱

With the design finalised, Shire moved into the build phase — turning sustainable plans into a real-world community asset.

The project began with a full drainage CCTV survey to assess existing infrastructure, protect site integrity, and ensure no hidden defects could compromise the works. From there, the team stripped back existing surfacing, established new levels, introduced and compacted hardcore sub-base materials, and installed the bespoke recycled composite planter system.

The final stages included sustainably sourced timber cladding and integrated seating, bringing the sensory garden to life as a safe, durable, and engaging outdoor space for pupils.

This build phase demonstrates how innovative planning, recycled materials, and community-focused engineering can create lasting social value while delivering meaningful, transparent carbon offsetting.

🌱 The King’s School Carbon Off-Setting Project – Part Two: Design 🌱

With the project vision established, the next stage focused on creating a sustainable, practical design that would transform an unused outdoor area into a safe sensory garden for pupils.

The Plan:

✔️ Strip the 200m² area by 150mm, with all excavated soil re-assigned across school grounds to eliminate landfill waste

✔️ Construct bespoke planters using the Shire Recycled Composite Panelling System, increasing planter height by an additional 150mm to accommodate surfacing materials

✔️ Backfill the area with 80mm MOT Type 1, compacted using vibrating plate technology for a durable sub-base

✔️ Leave the final surface 70mm below finished level, ready for the school’s tarmac installation

✔️ Install topsoil within planters and finish with sustainably sourced timber cladding and integrated seating

Through detailed technical drawings, Shire demonstrated how our recycled composite panelling system — traditionally used for retaining walls — can be innovatively adapted to create attractive, durable, and environmentally responsible community spaces.

This design reflects our commitment to:

🌍 Sustainable engineering
♻️ Material reuse
🏫 Community investment
🌱 Transparent carbon offsetting

Because meaningful sustainability is about building spaces that benefit both people and the planet.

🌱 Carbon Off-Setting Through Community Action 🌱

At Shire, we believe carbon responsibility should be transparent, meaningful, and directly beneficial to local communities. Rather than purchasing generic carbon credits, we invest our time, expertise, and resources into projects that create lasting environmental and social value.

Our second carbon offsetting initiative proudly supports The King’s School, Fair Oak, Hampshire — a registered charitable independent school providing inclusive education for children of all backgrounds, including those with additional learning needs.

Project Aim:

1️⃣ Project Purpose & Charitable Context
Delivering pro-bono groundworks and landscaping to support the school’s outdoor learning and wellbeing environment, while aligning with Shire’s wider CSR and community engagement objectives.

2️⃣ Scope of Works
Transforming an unused, muddy, waterlogged area into a safe, stimulating sensory garden with planters, seating, and landscaped spaces.

3️⃣ Operational Delivery
Managing the full project during the Easter holiday period with strict H&S controls, ensuring work is completed efficiently within a school environment.

4️⃣ Safeguarding Requirements
All works are delivered in line with school safeguarding policies, child safety standards, and site segregation protocols, with DBS-approved staff where required.

5️⃣ Intended Outcomes
Creating a durable, child-friendly external space that enhances the school’s facilities while delivering measurable social value and charitable impact.

This project reflects our commitment to sustainable engineering, social responsibility, and creating spaces that truly make a difference.
