We are pleased to announce the promotion of Mark Hartley to Operations Director of Shire UK.

Over the course of his career with the business, Mark has held a variety of leadership roles, helping shape many of the services, teams and operational capabilities that form the company today. His experience spans consultancy, telecoms, operational management and business growth, giving him a unique understanding of both our clients' needs and the practical realities of delivering projects across the UK.

Throughout this journey, Mark has been recognised for his pragmatic approach, strong client relationships and commitment to supporting colleagues across the business. His ability to combine strategic thinking with hands-on operational leadership has made him an invaluable member of the senior team.

As Shire continues to grow and evolve, Mark's knowledge, experience and leadership will play a key role in shaping the next chapter of our business.

From the Archives I Shire Consulting Project Spotlight

A look back at the Michael Baker Boathouse at King's School, Worcester, one of several projects delivered by Shire Consulting as part of our long-standing relationship with the school.

Located directly beside the River Severn, the boathouse was designed around a series of demanding structural, environmental and historic constraints.
The two-storey building comprises a steel frame, timber roof, precast concrete upper floor and a robust suspended concrete ground floor. Its distinctive curved form was designed to evoke the shape of a boat, culminating in a large glazed and cantilevered prow with views along the river and towards Worcester's historic skyline.

The lower level provides extensive rowing-boat storage and was intentionally designed to flood during periods of high river levels. Rather than resisting the water and creating significant pressure against the external structure, floodwater is allowed to enter and drain away in a controlled manner.

Robust materials were used throughout this level, while more vulnerable plant and occupied accommodation were positioned above the anticipated flood levels.
Ground conditions presented a further challenge, with weak made ground identified beneath the building. A piled foundation solution with reinforced concrete ground beams was developed, helping minimise excavation and reduce the risk of disturbing the adjacent road, retaining structures and archaeologically sensitive ground.

The upper level contains highly insulated training, changing and reception spaces. As the steel frame continued between the unheated lower storage level and the insulated accommodation above, thermal breaks were incorporated into key steelwork connections to reduce heat transfer. Timber I-beams were also used within the upper walls and roof, allowing high levels of insulation while limiting thermal bridging.

The project brought together flood-resilient design, complex cantilevered geometry, archaeological constraints, restricted access and demanding thermal-performance requirements within one carefully coordinated structural solution.
The Michael Baker Boathouse received a RIBA West Midlands Award and was recognised for the quality of its architecture and environmental design.
Projects like this demonstrate the breadth of work undertaken by Shire Consulting, combining structural engineering, flood resilience, sustainability and sensitive design within challenging historic locations.

βš™οΈ Relevelling a Building Without Rebuilding It βš™οΈ

When subsidence has affected a building's foundations, but the floor slab itself is still structurally sound, demolition and rebuild isn't always necessary. That's where jacking comes in.

Piles are installed at precise locations and depths, with jacking heads positioned beneath the slab. The structure is then lifted gradually, one jack at a time, with levels constantly monitored using laser equipment to keep everything precise. Once back to the required level, the piles are permanently concreted in, and the site is reinstated.

The result: a structure raised by up to 50mm, restored to its original level, without the cost and disruption of starting from scratch.

Most commonly used on single-storey buildings, in the right circumstances this technique can even be applied to two-storey structures, and we've used it to restore properties across the UK.

🧱 Case Study: Traditional Underpinning 🧱

When a residential property in Matlock, Derbyshire had a history of structural movement, and crack stitching alone hadn't solved it, Shire was appointed by a national house builder warranty provider to get to the root of the problem.

Further investigation confirmed what our engineers suspected: the movement wasn't cosmetic, the foundations themselves were unstable, and a permanent solution was needed.

Piling is often the default answer to foundation issues, but not here. The property already had deep foundations, and connecting a piled solution would have meant fully exposing them anyway, removing piling's main advantage. Traditional underpinning gave our team direct access to extend the existing foundation depth and full control over how the works were sequenced.

The challenge: Excavations reached depths of up to 4.2 metres. A bespoke shoring solution kept only a controlled section of foundation exposed at any time, and with the property sitting on a hillside, significant groundwater ingress meant sump pumps were needed in every excavation zone to keep conditions manageable.

The solution: Anti-heave measures and shuttering were installed bay by bay, deepening the foundations in a controlled, methodical sequence. Site access was extremely restricted, so plant machinery was off the table; everything was moved by hand.

The outcome: The works stopped the progressive foundation movement, leaving the property with a stable, deepened foundation system built to perform for the long term, delivered safely despite challenging ground conditions and a heavily restricted site.
