It's not just large estates and commercial landholdings that benefit from professional tree risk assessment and tree management advice.

Earlier this week I was in a local Dorset village inspecting the trees within this beautiful private garden. Mature trees are often one of a property's greatest assets, providing character, privacy, shade and wildlife value. Most people see a beautiful village scene here.

A quiet footpath winding alongside a stream, traditional stone cottages, thatched roofs and yet another picture-postcard Dorset setting.

I see a Prunus with dead branches developing in the upper canopy.

After nearly 25 years of working with trees, it's amazing how your eyes become tuned to the subtle signs that most people walk straight past. What started as a job has become second nature.

Whether I'm walking through a woodland, driving down a country lane or enjoying a village stroll, I'm always assessing trees without even realising it.

Conducting tree risk assessments is a key part of responsible tree management, helping to ensure trees remain safe while retaining the many benefits they provide to people, wildlife and the wider landscape.

Assessing trees in areas like these are a reminder that the job isn’t just about identifying defects or assessing risk.

It’s also about understanding the value that trees and green spaces bring to a place.

Decaying wood provides vital habitat for fungi, invertebrates, bats, birds and countless other species (even tree seedlings), making it one of the most valuable ecological features found in our trees.

A timely reminder that trees do far more than just look good in the landscape.

They provide habitat for wildlife, help improve soil health, reduce erosion, store carbon, improve water infiltration and offer valuable shelter from wind and extreme weather.

And, as this flock clearly demonstrates, they also provide something equally important during hot weather - shade.

Access to natural shade can help livestock avoid heat stress and improve welfare, making mature trees a valuable asset on farms as well as in our towns and cities.

As I keep saying, one thing I enjoy about surveying the trees for land owners is stumbling across features that spark more questions than answers.

Hidden amongst the beautiful veteran trees of a Dorset deer park was this curious little structure. My mapping software identified it simply as a "summer house", but beyond that, I know nothing of its history, purpose or age.

Was it genuinely somewhere to sit and enjoy the landscape? A viewing point for the deer park? A shelter for estate workers? Or perhaps something else entirely?

Whatever its story, it's easy to imagine generations of people standing in exactly the same spot, looking out across a very different landscape whilst some of the surrounding trees quietly continued their journey through the centuries.

If anyone knows anything about these types of structures or their purpose within historic parkland, I'd be fascinated to learn more.

Fungal fruiting bodies can really build up a picture of what might be happening beneath the bark of a tree or even below ground, but interpreting their significance isn't always straightforward.

Some can be really easy to spot due to the size, colouration or position on the tree. Others are far more subtle, especially when fruiting bodies are old, weathered, partially obscured, or only appear intermittently. Missing these signs can mean overlooking potentially significant structural defects.

Its important to make clear that the presence of a fungal fruiting body does not automatically mean a tree is unsafe, but it should certainly prompt further consideration of the type of decay involved, its location, the extent of colonisation, and what that means for the long-term retention and management of the tree.

Understanding the relationship between fungi and tree stability is a key part of a professional tree risk assessment.
