🚿 Bathroom Transformation – Designed with Dementia in Mind
A really rewarding before & after transformation on this bathroom. This project wasn't simply about modernising the room — the customer was living with dementia, so careful consideration went into the layout, accessibility, colours and contrasts to create a bathroom that was safer and easier to navigate while still looking modern.
The original bathroom was completely stripped back and extensively remodelled, including:
Full removal of the existing bath, shower enclosure, basin/vanity, toilet and bidet
Wall removed and altered to create direct access from the bedroom, making the bathroom much easier for the customer to access
Plumbing altered and rerouted to suit the completely new layout
Room fully plastered throughout ready for the new finishes
New electrical works throughout, including new recessed LED spotlights
Underfloor heating installed beneath the new flooring for additional warmth and comfort
New dark floor tiling, providing a strong contrast against the lighter sanitaryware
Large-format white wall tiles with contrasting green painted walls
Feature tiling to the new shower area
Large low-level shower tray and spacious glass enclosure installed in place of the previous smaller shower
New shower system with rainfall head and separate handset
Fold-down shower seat installed to provide additional comfort and support
New WC with contrasting green fitted furniture
New countertop basin and vanity unit with additional storage
Large round mirror installed above the basin
New chrome heated towel radiator
All finishing, decorating and making good completed to bring the entire room together
The green, white and dark contrasting colour scheme was deliberately chosen with the customer's dementia in mind. Clear contrast between the floor, walls, furniture and sanitaryware helps make the different areas and fixtures easier to distinguish visually.
Combined with the new bedroom access, larger shower area, shower seat, improved lighting and simplified layout, the aim was to create a bathroom that was comfortable, practical and easier for the customer to use independently.
A massive transformation from what was there before — and a project that shows how a bathroom can be completely modernised while still being designed around the individual needs of the person using it.
