A new garden doesn't always need new materials.

For this small garden in Redland, Bristol, we wanted to show just how much can be achieved through thoughtful design and creatively reusing materials.

Working within a considered investment, we rethought the layout, lifted and relaid the existing granite paving, and introduced a softer, more naturalistic planting scheme that brings colour, texture and wildlife into the space.

The new garden steps, crafted from reclaimed timber originally used on the deck of Bristol's iconic SS Great Britain. A lovely connection to the city's heritage.

Around 90% of the materials in this garden were reclaimed or reused.

A wonderful example of Artisan EDIT - Considered garden design, thoughtfully simplified.

Completed in December 2025.

Why garden lighting is never a bad idea.

A well-designed garden shouldn’t disappear when the sun goes down.

Lighting can completely change how a space feels in the evening — picking out the structure of a tree, washing light across a textured wall, softly illuminating planting or simply making a route through the garden feel more inviting.

The key is restraint. It’s less about lighting everything, and more about choosing the right moments.

It also extends the time you can enjoy the garden, particularly through autumn and winter when the evenings draw in much earlier.

We design lighting into many of our gardens from the outset and also offer dedicated installation of in-lite garden lighting for existing spaces.

A relatively small intervention that can make a very big difference.

Creating a landscape for an 18th-century home is as much about restraint as it is transformation.

A garden sensitively composed to elevate the architecture, never distracts from it.

A space for modern living, with an essence of heritage. Considered, timeless and made to feel as though it has always belonged.

An awkward shape, classic new-build poor quality soil and space that was deprived of character.

We did little a wiggle when our lovely client, M, gave us permission to design something unique.

Having come from a larger more traditional cottage garden, M had moved into the new Chocolate Factory development in Keynsham and was ready to change things up.

We created this together.

A traditional or contemporary garden?

We tend to lean towards the more contemporary but not all gardens will feel at home with this design aesthetic. Landscapes need to feel grounded and connected to the local vernacular, history and architecture.

This beautiful Georgian terrace deserved a space which complemented it's heritage.

Come with Will .artisan on a garden tour of this English town garden.

We’re absolutely delighted to share our Henleaze garden has received a BALI National Landscape Award 🏆 BALI Landscape UK

Awards are always a wonderful recognition of the finished garden, but what means the most to us is when the judging reflects the things we care about throughout the whole process.

The BALI judge described the project as “fantastic”, praising the attention to detail and outstanding construction, but they also picked up on something we’re particularly proud of: the relationship between our team and our clients.

They said it was “great to see how the client respected the contractor and vice versa”.

That feels especially significant on a project like this. Every single material, tool and piece of equipment had to travel through the house to reach the back garden. It required huge amounts of care, communication and trust from everyone involved.

The result is a garden that feels like a genuine extension of the home. Considered, beautifully crafted and somewhere the family can enjoy for many years to come.

The best recognition of all came from our clients: “The end result has completely exceeded our expectations. It looks even better than we imagined.”

A huge thank you to our brilliant team for the care and craftsmanship that went into creating it, and to our clients for trusting us with their home and garden.

A massive shout out to designers Ems and Gaby, Team leader Kyle, PM Pete and landscape team Arthur and Tim. 🫶
