⭐ Great products and competitive prices are important. But good service really shows when something doesn’t quite go to plan.

We loved receiving this recent review from Earthwise shop customer Pete Williams:

💬 “The real measure of a company is not that they provide what you pay for, that is a given, but how they handle issues that do arise. John and his team were very pro-active in resolving delivery problems that occurred due to the house being too new to be on registries.

Their pricing is competitive and furthermore the staff are all very amicable. Five point one stars.” ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.1

Thanks Pete!

A great reflection of what we want the Earthwise shop to offer: quality products, competitive pricing and support from a team that knows the products we sell.

PASSIVE HOUSE PROJECT REVISIT

Not every great Passive House starts with the perfect plot.

This home was built on a long, narrow site beside a busy road in Chew Magna.

The challenge?

✔ Create privacy from neighbouring properties.

✔ Fill the home with natural light.

✔ Deliver exceptional energy performance.

The result was The Pump House - a certified Passive House that was later featured in Passive House Plus magazine.

One of our favourite design features is the central Wintergarden, bringing daylight deep into the home while creating a wonderful living space throughout the year.

Like all high-performance homes, the project didn't stop evolving after completion. The homeowners monitored temperatures, refined their summer shading strategy and demonstrated how thoughtful design continues long after handover.

It's a great reminder that successful Passive House projects aren't about chasing numbers.

They're about creating homes that are comfortable, practical and enjoyable to live in.

The Future Homes Standard will change more than the heating system.

Much of the conversation has focused on heat pumps and solar PV, but the real shift is towards whole-house building performance.

Homes built to the Future Homes Standard will need to work as complete systems, where insulation, airtightness, ventilation, heating and commissioning are considered together from the very beginning.

As Ben East, Director of Earthwise Construction, explains:

"The Future Homes Standard isn't simply about adding a heat pump and solar panels. It means the whole home needs to work together as one system. Airtightness, ventilation, heating, cooling, insulation and commissioning all need to be designed together from the very beginning."

Whether you're planning a self-build, specifying projects as an architect, delivering homes as a builder, or working in the renewables sector, understanding these changes is becoming increasingly important.

We've put together a practical guide covering:
✔️ What the Future Homes Standard is
✔️ Why it matters
✔️ Who it affects
✔️ The role of airtightness and ventilation
✔️ Where MVHR fits into the bigger picture
✔️ Answers to the most common questions

Off the Tools. Onto the Water. 🚣☀️

Last week our team swapped the working day for an afternoon exploring Bristol Harbour as part of our annual summer get-together.

Setting off from The Cottage Inn, we paddled around Bristol Harbour, taking in views of the iconic SS Great Britain before venturing into some of the hidden waterways off the River Avon. Along the way, our brilliant guide from Bristol SUP shared fascinating stories about Bristol's rich maritime history.

It was a fantastic opportunity to spend time together outside of work, enjoy some sunshine and see our city from a completely different perspective, before returning to The Cottage Inn for some well-earned drinks.

A big thank you to the team at SUP Bristol for a brilliant experience - we'd highly recommend it! 🙌

☀️ Can your MVHR system keep your home cool during a heatwave?

With the continuing spell of hot weather across the UK, this is one of the questions we're being asked most often.

The answer might surprise you...

❌ An MVHR system isn't designed to replace air conditioning.

✅ What it does do is provide a continuous supply of fresh, filtered air while removing stale, humid air from your home. Many modern systems, including the Zehnder units we install, also feature an automatic summer bypass. This allows cooler evening and overnight air to enter your home without passing through the heat exchanger, helping to improve comfort when temperatures begin to fall.

A few simple tips for getting the best from your MVHR this summer:

✔ Let your summer bypass do its job.
✔ Open windows during cooler evenings to create natural cross-ventilation.
✔ Keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.
✔ Continue running your MVHR to maintain healthy indoor air quality.

Looking for even greater summer comfort?

Certain Zehnder MVHR systems can also be combined with ComfoClime or ComfoPost to temper the incoming fresh air. While these aren't a replacement for air conditioning, they can help improve comfort when designed as part of a whole-home heating and cooling strategy.

We've recently updated our practical guide to include more advice on operating your MVHR during the summer, along with year-round maintenance tips to keep your system performing at its best.

Helping Raise Retrofit Standards

Last week, our Director and Project Manager, Ben East, delivered the final Training the Trainers session for the Green Register's Level 2 Retrofit Skills Qualification at SGS College's apprenticeship training centre in Filton, Bristol.

The session was delivered to the SGS College tutors who will go on to teach the qualification, helping equip the next generation of retrofit professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to deliver high-quality retrofit projects.

A key focus of the session was the importance of ventilation in retrofit. As homes become more airtight and better insulated, good ventilation is essential for maintaining healthy indoor air quality, managing moisture and ensuring building performance.

It was fantastic to see the tutors so engaged throughout the day, asking thoughtful questions and keen to deepen their understanding of ventilation and retrofit.

We're proud to support initiatives like this that help raise knowledge and standards across the retrofit industry.

Thank you to SGS College for hosting and to the Green Register for its continued work in developing retrofit skills across the sector.

Earthwise Answers Your FAQs

Can you have MVHR in any type of house?

Yes- but the answer is a little more nuanced than many people think.

While MVHR is commonly associated with Passive House projects, it can also be successfully installed in many new builds, renovation projects and existing homes.

The important consideration isn't the age of the property. It's whether the ventilation system is properly designed for the building and how airtight the home is.

Every property is different, which is why we always recommend starting with good design rather than simply choosing a ventilation unit.

Have a question about MVHR or airtightness?

Leave it in the comments and it could feature in a future Earthwise Answers your FAQs post.

🔨 Progress update from our Bristol EnerPHit retrofit project.

One of the large goal post steel frames has now been installed, creating the opening for the triple-glazed sliding doors that will be fitted later in the project.

As soon as the steelwork was in place, the team could begin detailing the airtightness layer around it. Once the rest of the build progresses, access becomes much more difficult, so getting these details right now is essential.

It's another example of why successful retrofit projects rely on careful sequencing and attention to detail, with every stage laying the groundwork for the next.

More updates to come as this project takes shape.
