Getting hands-on with lime!

This week Alex and Claire spent a morning out of the office with carringtonLime | Heritage Skills Trainer Heritage Skills Training exploring lime plasters, traditional materials and natural pigments, organised by Women in Property South West

It was great to see their new training centre, learn about using lime plaster over existing less porous surfaces, such as emulsion paint, as a potential approach to helping manage moisture and mould growth, and hear about their exciting upcoming courses and on-site training.

A brilliant practical session learning to use a material we often specify and an opportunity to bring new knowledge back to our conservation and heritage work at shu.

A huge good luck Claire Humphreys and the other 49 women taking part in the I❤️my Self London to Paris Cycle ride that started in the early hours this morning🚴‍♀️

Claire Humphreys is taking on a 3‑day, 300km challenge fundraising for her local Scouts group, where she is a proud Cub assistance leader for over 10 years.

Claire Humphreys, Geoff Smith & Alex Lawrie had the pleasure of attending The LK Group x Highgate Transportation Limited coffee morning today at No.20 Berkeley Square

Fiona Bennett & Judith Caddick are also taking part in the Women in Property South West Cycle Ride to Paris with Claire Humphreys next week so it was a great opportunity to hear more about the ride to raise funds for chosen charities.

As always, it was great to connect and catch up with good coffee and crossaints☕️🥐

Project Update - The Green, Richmond

Alex Lawrie and Claire Humphreys spent a very dusty day cataloguing the baltic pine heritage panels at our Grade II* early 18th century house in Richmond. These were taken off the wall in 2012 to facilitate some major structural works, placed on racks and have barely moved since. The structural works also halted until we were appointed, along with Stuart Ellis and the team at MNP Engineering Services, in 2024 to get the structural works completed and the shell refurbished.

The structural works threw up quite a lot of hidden surprises along the way but the building is now stable and the external envelope almost complete. We very much looking forward to piecing the panels back on their relevant internal walls.

Thanks to our QS Frank Gainsbury and Luca, Chris Boyle FCIOB, Conor Campion and all the team from Champion Build who have undertaken the work so far.

First day in the practice and already:
🐾 Conducted a full office inspection
🐾 Attended several important meetings
🐾 Supervised the design team
🐾 Demanded belly rubs from colleagues
🐾 Taken several well-earned naps
🐾 Contributed absolutely nothing to the drawings

A natural architect, clearly. 😂

Summer office outing ☀️ ⚓

Fabulous summer outing in and Geoff's old stomping ground, for a visit to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and the The Mary Rose, Portsmouth, followed by a trip along the old city walls and lunch at The Still And West Portsmouth Spice Island.

Geoff and Claire have not been to see the Mary Rose since the 80s clutching their badges. Fascinating museum bringing history to life.

Project Complete - MOLTOBUONO!59 🍝

Following the success of their wonderful Park Street restaurant, Molto Buono has now opened its doors on Princess Victoria Street in Clifton Village.

Anyone who has visited the Park Street restaurant will know what makes it so special: a warm welcome, a friendly atmosphere, and fantastic food. We are sure that the Clifton community has already made the team feel right at home.

Shu Architects were delighted to have been able to assist with the planning application and building regulations approval for this exciting new venture.

We wish Simone and the whole family every success with their new restaurant.

Although the sun is fairly relentless at the moment, the rain will surely come…

We are pleased to have secured planning for repairs and improvements to this Grade II list building on Tyndalls Park Road as part of the University of Bristol’s Art Complex

As well as stonework improvement the work included an assessment of the drainage and maintenance of the rainwater goods resulting in the inclusion of additional downpipes and improved to the specifications. Good above ground drainage management keeps the internal heritage fabric dry.

Project update: Extension in Sneyd Park, Bristol

This completed project has seen the remodelling and extensions to the existing Arts and Crafts dwelling to refocus the house around the connection to the garden and update the property to ensure it is suited to modern family living.

The results create a new, vaulted kitchen space opening up onto the terrace. A new home office is also created over looking the garden, and the internal spaces have been reconfigured to produce spaces to be enjoyed by all members of the family and guests alike. Care has been taken to ensure the new extensions reflect the charm and character of the existing house and we think it looks like all of the elements have always been there.
