Six years ago, Skeletal Consulting Engineers was founded with the aim of providing practical, client-focused engineering advice.

Since then, the business has grown, our team has expanded, and the range of projects we work on has continued to evolve. What hasn't changed is our focus on practical engineering, strong relationships and helping clients solve complex problems in a straightforward way.

Over the last year, we've welcomed new team members, expanded our civil engineering capability, worked on projects across a wide range of sectors, supported aspiring engineers through placements and mentoring, and continued to give back through local volunteering initiatives.

A huge thank you to our clients, collaborators, contractors, architects, fellow consultants and, of course, the Skeletal team who have all been part of the journey.

Here's to year seven.

We're excited to share that The Armstrong in Thornbury has been shortlisted for the Sustainable and Social Impact Award at the Insider Media's Property Awards South West 2026.

Skeletal Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering design services throughout the project, including the removal of much of the internal load-bearing timber structure to create larger open spaces, new transfer structures, lintels for new openings and assessments of the existing balcony and roof.

It's particularly rewarding to see the project recognised in this category. Bringing an existing building back into use as a thriving community venue is exactly the kind of project we love being involved in.

We're proud to have worked alongside The Armstrong, Sanderson Weatherall and Steele Davis to help bring the project to life, and we're looking forward to the awards later this year.

🚗 Project Complete: Millennium Square Car Park, Bristol

The refurbishment works at Millennium Square car park in Bristol have now reached completion.

Working on behalf of PHD Building Advisory Ltd, Skeletal Consulting Engineers investigated and developed solutions for defects affecting the access ramp to the below-ground car park.

The project involved assessing a number of challenges, including movement within the existing block-paved surfacing, water ingress through the ramp and drainage performance.

Through a combination of site investigation, review of existing information and civil engineering design, we identified the causes of the issues and developed practical engineering solutions, including ramp resurfacing, waterproofing improvements and upgrades to the existing drainage arrangements.

By carefully assessing the existing structure and the causes of the defects, we were able to develop practical, buildable solutions that improve the long-term performance of the car park.

🎉 Celebrating a successful few months at Skeletal Consulting Engineers

This week, the team got together for lunch to celebrate what has been a fantastic few months for the business. Alongside welcoming Ben, Clare and Rif to the team, we've also celebrated a number of significant milestones and project wins, including:

🎓 Rif's graduation from the University of Bristol - congratulations to Rif on completing his Civil Engineering degree. We're incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication he has shown throughout his studies, and it's been fantastic to see him achieve this important milestone.

🎾 Guildford Spectrum Leisure Complex – appointed to provide structural engineering design services for the refurbishment and remodelling of the Guildford Spectrum Leisure Complex.

🐕‍🦺 Animal Trust, Sheffield – now on site, we're delivering the civil and structural engineering design for a new single-storey, steel-framed veterinary practice for the not-for-profit community interest company.

🏛️ University of Reading, Great Hall – appointed to provide structural engineering services for the refurbishment of the Grade II listed roof, including back-analysis of the existing ground floor structure to support temporary scaffolding loads.

🏥 Bristol Royal Infirmary and Royal Hospital for Children, Children and Young People’s (CYP) Theatres – delivering structural and civil engineering design services for the project that will provide a 6-bed Medical Assessment Unit, a day-case ward with 16 bays and 4 cubicles, and two additional CYP operating theatres with associated support accommodation in converted spaces within the existing BRI and BRHC buildings.

🏡 Abbots Leigh, Bristol – now on site, we're providing structural and civil engineering design for a striking new hillside home adjacent to Clifton Suspension Bridge. The project includes a large steel-framed dwelling, a subterranean reinforced concrete annexe with a contiguous piled retaining wall, and careful coordination of drainage and external works across the challenging sloping site.

It's been an exciting period of growth, with new team members joining the business and projects progressing across the healthcare, education and leisure sectors.

A big thank you to our clients and project partners for their continued trust and support. We're looking forward to seeing these projects develop over the coming months.

👋 Welcome to the team, Ben!

We're delighted to welcome Benedict Webber to Skeletal, joining us as a Structural Engineer.

Ben brings a strong background in structural engineering, having studied at both UWE Bristol and the University of Bath. He has experience designing with a range of structural materials across both new-build and refurbishment projects, alongside a particular interest in sustainable design and the role structural engineers can play in reducing the environmental impact of the built environment.

In addition to his engineering work, Ben is Chair of the IStructE Tuesday Group (Western Counties Young Members Group), where he actively supports the next generation of engineers through networking events, technical presentations, and STEM engagement. His passion for developing the profession and inspiring future engineers makes him a fantastic addition to the team.

Welcome to the team, Ben! It's great to have you on board!

👋 Welcome to the team, Rifat!

We are pleased to welcome AHM Rifat to Skeletal Consulting Engineers for a summer internship placement.

Rif has just completed his Civil Engineering (BEng) degree at the University of Bristol. He has a strong interest in structural engineering, with a particular focus on applying engineering principles to solve real-world challenges, and is keen to build on his academic knowledge by gaining practical industry experience and developing his technical skills.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time we've worked with Rif. Three years ago, Jack and Tom were involved in mentoring him through the University of Bristol's Industrial Mentoring Scheme, supporting a small group of first-year Civil Engineering students as they began their studies. It's great to see how far he has come since then and to now have him working alongside the team.

Welcome, Rif! It's great to have you on board!

College House, Bristol has now reached completion, delivering 57 postgraduate accommodation units for Hello Student in the heart of the city.

Retaining and adapting the existing structure brought its own challenges, requiring careful coordination of new layouts, services and structural alterations within the constraints of the original building.

The result is a scheme that extends the life of an existing asset while delivering modern, sustainable accommodation for future generations of students and achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating.

We're proud to have supported Empiric Student Property plc alongside the wider project team, including Louis de Soissons Architects, Axiom Project Services, Parrish Consultancy and Michael Brady Ltd, in bringing this transformation to life.

🌱 SCE Volunteering Day at The Ardagh

Last week, the Skeletal team spent the day volunteering at The Ardagh Community Trust in North Bristol - a fantastic local charity and community hub run for the benefit of local residents.

A key focus of the day was helping progress one of the Trust’s long-standing sustainability goals by installing guttering and IBC water storage tanks to support rainwater harvesting and reduce reliance on mains water.

Alongside this, the team got stuck into a range of practical improvement works across the site, including repairs, clearing and tidying works, and helping improve facilities used by the wider community.

It was great to support an organisation doing such valuable work locally and help tick off a good number of items from their ever-growing to-do list.
