Final Product.
A few pics of the end of the job. I’ll get a few more of the exterior when the sun shines again but for now that’s about it.

Thanks to Greg for a great partnership over the 3 months last summer. Looking forward to the next one! Also…

FINAL PUSH:

With the kitchen delivered by and appliances arrived it was time to assemble everything.

We went for the Newthorpe shaker painted in Bond St No.219.

Stainless steel Range cooker (Belling), Stainless steel American fridge freezer (Hisence), Integrated dishwasher (Hisence) 18 bottle plonk fridge (Curry’s) and Buttler sink from .

I shopped around for quartz worktops. We chose the 30mm Cimstone cortina quartz and provided a competitive quote and there communication, service and fit out was faultless.

Ceilings and walls painted in Maugham White in marble Matt emulsion.

FLOORS AND DOORS

Back at the Shirley Street build…

After the majority of the plastering complete we started to concentrate on the floor. We opted for a wet underfloor heating system which has been brilliant to live with over the winter

It essentially replaced 2 radiators, one in the hallway and one in the dining room where the new entrance is to the kitchen.

We had to complete the plastering, lay the underfloor heating and pour the screed before the aluminum bifold doors had arrived for reasons I won’t go into on here but if you want to know who not to go for in that department then DM me and I’ll run you thru it 😠

I was keen on a microcement floor finish. It’s semi industrial and I like the grey smoky look.

Microcement is something Greg and myself had not tried before so I was relying on online resource and YouTube videos to get my head around it all.

It’s easy to use if you know how to use a trowel and is applied in stages over the space of around 3-4 days and finished with an aqua-seal and resin. 👍

Project Shirley St 2021 continued…

With the building sealed, roof finished and the concrete foundations laid we were onto the first fix electrics courtesy of Ed and the lads at

Ed was able to put a great plan together for us from the kitchen plans and I’ve always enjoyed dealing with them over the years.

At this point we had chosen our kitchen supplier and plans were put into place.

We took quotes from 4 different kitchen suppliers and chose to go with on recommendation from and also from a very good first impression on visiting their show room in Wivelsfield.

A combination of excellent quality materials and very good personal service sealed it for us (kitchen fitting pics in the following post)

We kept the original boiler in place up until this point which was a great feat in itself. Demolishing walls it was attached to and working around it was fun while it was suspended from the joist in its original position of the old kitchen all along 🤩

Local company supplied and fitted us with the Vaillant Eco Tec Plus 832 and they did a brilliant job. Instillation went smooth and they carried out a very tidy job.

Insulation in, plasterboard up and plastering done by the master of all plasterers, Greg.. best plasterer in the land and that’s coming from a painter 🙏🏼

Once our walls were up, steels in and foundations down it was time to crack on with the roof.

The weather was warm and working conditions were great! This point felt like we had really turned a corner and it was good to get the carpentry tools out.

Initial thoughts were to have a thin roof light running across the back of the house where the wrap around extension is.. along with another larger one in the side return opening. But with the back door opening being as wide as possible I thought against it and focused on a much bigger side opening than first imagined.

The side opening is 2700mm x 1200mm.

I came across online and was able to order a double glazed custom made roof light from them. They even couriered out the frame for it so we could just pop that into place and build around.

A slight delay (6 weeks) on delivery but they were always in touch with updates so it wasn’t a problem.

With the OSB down and insulated we started prepping the roof, opting for a system finish.

At the point of installing the first steel the last surviving household necessities were still in place in the old kitchen.

Boiler suspended keeping the house with hot water and the washing machine come tool storage table stayed till the bitter end!

During the installation of the steels there were plenty more loads of waste to remove from the property over the following week or so.

Concrete foundations done and a much tidier site to work with. 🍺

BUNGAROOSH!!!

Most houses on the coast of England, especially Brighton and Hove built in the Victorian era are built from bungaroosh.

This is a mixture of materials like broken bricks, flints, cobblestones, pebbles, sand and pieces of wood.

Here the strong boys were up supporting the house and demolition of the walls has started.

It was messy and lots of it so there were many tipper loads of bungaroosh to Robins Quarry. But great to get stuck in making the beer taste even better at the end of a hot day!

Steels ordered from really prompt and professional service from those guys. Always reliable and double and triple checking sizes. A breeze to deal with!

3 steels in the first order followed by another to replace the catnic lintel that was specified on the structural plans for over the bifold opening. (Reducing internal cracking and much stronger)

First week of the Shirley St build is under way and it was all about testing the old back out!

Demolition! Come on, who doesn’t like demolishing s£!t.!!

First up we needed to demo the deep side return garden wall on the west side which we share with our neighbour who have also employed us to carry out a bit of work for them including digging all footings and build their block wall for a future extension similar to ours.

Luckily our neighbour has a ground floor garage leading out to the garden so we were able to hire a 700mm micro digger to slip into the garden to dig those footings!

Our plot size is around 4700mm wide by 4950mm wide. Footings to be at least 1m deep! So the fact the digger made its grand appearance was an absolute delight and probably saved us about a month of hand digging and saving my poor old back. 🙏🏼

Access through the garage and into the garden was epic. It saved us so much time having that digger and also for the fact nothing was going back through our house meaning less mess (at this stage at least)

The amount of hardcore and soil to remove at this point totalled to around 10 tonnes. 😅

The Start of:
Project Shirley Street-

Last year we decided to extend the kitchen in our Victorian terrace property in Hove, UK.

I always thought we would employ a building company to carry out the work but as time went on I had this desire to do it myself along with the help of other.

As a decorator your always one of the last onsite, wether it be a new build or renovation project. You never get to see the foundations, plumbing, block work or timber framing being done, something I’ve always been interested in getting involved in.

My wife and I weighed up the options, wether it would be possible for me to take time out from ‘being on the tools’ painting and decorating and completing this project of ours. It would mean carrying on running my painting and decorating business along with the build.

We decided to go ahead and come June 2021 we started the full build. Right in the middle of a busy summer of business with JB Decorating Ltd.!!

Thanks to the guys for putting in a good shift on the brush as well. Some big jobs were carried out over the summer.

Greg who I employed as my builder (and teacher 😀) is a great friend of mine and we have shared various jobs over the years. To be honest there wasn’t anyone else I’d rather employ. He’s a grafter and has a skill set second to none with experience in all areas of the build required.

I wanted to be fully hands on which meant carrying out all labour work, 5 days a week along with all project management tasks, ordering and pricing.

I’ll post some progress pics over the coming weeks. Hope you enjoy. DM me if you have any questions on parts of the build that interest.
Cheers, Jeremy.

I’ve been busy.!! Over the next few weeks I’ll be giving it the run down on how I went from that to this… keeping the painting business going at the same time.
Great challenge and well worth it.
