Well we've been here almost a month now and it's flown by but at the same time feels as though we've lived here forever!

When we 1st arrived I was excited to find we had some huge bunches of grapes ready to harvest. I'm not certain of the variety but they are probably Moscatel de Alejandría which is grown locally for a sweet w**e and also for Málaga raisins which are a traditional delicacy, sun dried with no preservatives added and containing the seeds which are packed with antioxidants.

As many of the grapes were starting to go over I spent some time sorting and cleaning up the bunches, saved the best for eating and giving to neighbours and then crushed the rest which made several litres of gorgeous juice.

Next year I will try making some raisins and the juice could be nice for some ice lollys.

Loving my new morning routine, every few days, of collecting figs. The leaves and sap are an irritant so I need to cover up and have now fashioned a handy collection method to make it faster. Gets a bit sore on the neck though as I'm getting 2 to 3 kgs at a time!

I've been giving lots away to friends, eating lots and experimenting with different preservation methods: sun drying, freezing whole and I've made a batch of jam so guests will be getting a pot of that in their welcome basket I reckon.

I also had company in the form of a preying mantis who seems to like hanging out near a ripe fig in waiting for her prey. I am so buzzing about the ecosystem I'm discovering here everyday. The preying mantis lays her eggs in an ootheca, a firm, foam-like protective casing holding 50 to 400 eggs, which are attached to stems or leaves in the undergrowth so I can see how the abundance of vegetation here is vital for the wildlife. It certainly pays not to be too tidy in the garden and I'll be keeping lots of areas a bit wild and letting the wildflowers continue to seed themselves around the place.

Hello all.

A little update: it has been a whirlwind year marking the end of an era for Green Girl Garden Care, as I've finished up my gardening duties in Brighton and moved to rural Andalusia to start a new project with my husband, Paul.

We fell in love with the area during travels in our motorhome and, last year, found our dream home—a finca with an acre of land in the mountains of the Axarquía.

As we're right on the edge of the Parque Natural de Sierras de Tejeda, we are spoilt for amazing scenery and wildlife such as European bee eaters, booted eagles, bats, geckos and praying mantis to name a few.

The plan is to grow organic food using a mixture of principles from regenerative and permaculture practices and, in time, offer eco-accommodation to guests.

I will post updates now and again showing what life is like here and what projects we're up to, so if you're interested, please give us a follow.
