You can walk on the screed. That does not mean you can lay the flooring.

A floor can feel solid underfoot while it still holds too much moisture for the chosen finish. Covering it too early can lead to problems with the flooring and its adhesive.

Drying time depends on the screed, its thickness and the conditions inside the building. A cold, poorly ventilated room can hold up the work, even when the surface looks ready.

Before flooring is fitted, the screed needs checking against the moisture requirements for the chosen finish.

We carry out standard ready-mix and site-mix screeds, flowing screeds and specialist quick-drying systems. If the programme is tight, the screed choice needs discussing before it goes down.

You can book the scaffolding. You cannot book the weather.

Temperature, damp conditions and wind all affect when external render can be applied. The work needs scheduling around the conditions the render requires, especially as the weather turns cooler.

For example, K Rend advises application at 5°C and rising, and warns against working in damp or very windy conditions. The instructions for the particular product being used still need checking.

Autumn rendering is possible when conditions are suitable. Allowing for the weather is part of planning the job.

One damaged section needn’t mean losing all your original cornice.

If the surrounding plaster is secure, small chips or cracks may be repaired in place. Missing or badly damaged sections may need replacing, while sound cornice can often be retained.

For detailed patterns, a mould can be taken from an undamaged section and used to cast a matching replacement in our own workshop.

The cause needs checking first. An active leak must be fixed before plaster repairs begin, and filling over loose cornice will not make it secure.

K-Systems described this Eastbourne refurbishment as one of a kind in the UK.

This was a government-funded fire safety project involving a large building complex in the Devonshire area. The existing external insulation had to be removed and replaced with a new cavity wall system, dual-density insulation and an aluminium cornice. The building also had to keep its original appearance.

Work began in January 2022. Once the exterior had been stripped back, substantial packing was needed to level the new rail system. We used non-combustible metal shims before fitting the cornice and insulation.

The render was then applied and the original quoins, bands and ashlar groove details were recreated. A hand-applied primer and silicone top coat completed the finish.

Extreme heat stopped work at times during summer 2022, followed by particularly wet weather that autumn and the following spring. The project took 18 months to complete, including a four-month extension.

You will not see the dry lining once the room is finished, but you will notice if it is wrong.

The framework and boarding behind the plaster decide how solid the wall feels and how well the finished surface holds up. If the framework is out or the boards are badly fitted, the problems appear later as cracked joints, movement, visible screw heads and sound carrying between rooms.

The board and system matter just as much as the framing. Fire, sound and insulation requirements all affect what goes into the wall or ceiling, which is why we work with architects and main contractors to make sure the specified performance is achieved.

On new builds and flat conversions, the walls and floors separating homes have to meet the sound insulation requirements in Part E of the Building Regulations. That depends on the full build-up and how it is fitted on site.

A new skim will not hold if the plaster underneath has already blown.

Tap along the wall with your knuckles. Hollow-sounding patches can mean the plaster has separated from the surface behind it. A skim coat needs a sound base, otherwise it can come away again and take the new paint with it.

Blown areas need to be taken back to a solid surface before they are replastered. The cause also needs checking. If damp is involved, that has to be dealt with before new plaster goes on.

Some walls only need a skim. If the existing plaster is sound but the surface is cracked, uneven or worn, a skim may be enough. We will assess it before recommending the work.

Skimming over plaster that is already failing leaves you paying for the same wall twice.

An off-the-shelf cornice rarely matches an original period ceiling, so we make our own.

When original cornice is damaged by a leak, a removed wall or a rewire, a catalogue replacement rarely matches the existing profile. Original plaster mouldings can vary between properties and sometimes between rooms.

We take a template from a sound section of the original and use it to cast the replacement in our workshop. This allows us to match the depth, projection and detail already in the room. Longer runs can also be formed on site.

The same process can be used for ceiling roses and other plaster details.

Two corners of a 21,100 seat football stadium, rendered without a single home game missed.

We were brought in by a main contractor we've worked with for years to rebuild two corners of Portsmouth FC's stadium, making way for new turnstiles, toilet blocks and a control room. The render needed to blend in with the stadium's black and white frontage, not stand out against it, while standing up to the kind of foot traffic you only get on a matchday.

Here's the catch with a live stadium. You can't shut it down for weeks to get the finish right. Every bit of scaffolding and every coat of render had to go up and come down between fixtures, and a very wet winter didn't make that any easier. Our site manager planned the whole sequence around the fixture list, so the work kept moving without ever holding up a matchday.

We used Krend's silicone scraped render, a robust basecoat reinforced with full mesh cloth followed by a fine finish, built to cope with thousands of fans passing through the same spot, match after match.

The corners now sit right alongside the rest of the ground, and they're built to take whatever a full house throws at them.

The best time to look at your render is a dry afternoon in August. The worst time is a wet night in January.

Cracks, hollow patches and heavy moss are the early signs. A hairline crack looks like nothing, but it is a route for water into the wall, and the first hard frost turns that water into something that pushes render off a building. Tap the wall and listen. A hollow, drummy sound means that section has already let go behind a surface that still looks fine. Heavy moss and algae tell you the wall is holding moisture instead of shedding it.

The part people forget is that repairs need weather to cure. Patching, priming and finishing a wall properly takes dry days and reasonable temperatures, and by November there are not many of those left. Booking the work in late summer means it is done and set before anything gets tested.

Plaster doesn't like a heatwave, and you can see it in the finish.

In this weather it goes off faster than you can work it. A warm, dry background pulls the water out of the mix before you have had a chance to flatten it, so instead of controlling the set you spend the whole job chasing it. That shows up later as trowel marks, ridges, fine crazing and patchy suction that fights you the moment the paint goes on.

Don't forget that the background matters more than the mix. A hot block wall or a sun facing board will drink the moisture straight out of a coat of plaster. Controlling suction first, keeping direct sun off the wall while you work, shutting the room down through the set and ventilating afterwards makes far more difference than anything you do with a bucket. Adding extra water to buy yourself time only weakens the finish you are trying to save.
