The best time to look at your render is a dry afternoon in August. The worst time is a wet night in January.

Cracks, hollow patches and heavy moss are the early signs. A hairline crack looks like nothing, but it is a route for water into the wall, and the first hard frost turns that water into something that pushes render off a building. Tap the wall and listen. A hollow, drummy sound means that section has already let go behind a surface that still looks fine. Heavy moss and algae tell you the wall is holding moisture instead of shedding it.

The part people forget is that repairs need weather to cure. Patching, priming and finishing a wall properly takes dry days and reasonable temperatures, and by November there are not many of those left. Booking the work in late summer means it is done and set before anything gets tested.

What we offer
✅ Render repairs, patching and colour matched making good
✅ Through coloured and silicone thin coat render
✅ Monocouche one coat scratch render
✅ K Pro protective treatment to slow dirt and algae
✅ All aspects of external wall insulation (EWI)
✅ Approved applicators for K-Rend and Weber

Plaster doesn't like a heatwave, and you can see it in the finish.

In this weather it goes off faster than you can work it. A warm, dry background pulls the water out of the mix before you have had a chance to flatten it, so instead of controlling the set you spend the whole job chasing it. That shows up later as trowel marks, ridges, fine crazing and patchy suction that fights you the moment the paint goes on.

Don't forget that the background matters more than the mix. A hot block wall or a sun facing board will drink the moisture straight out of a coat of plaster. Controlling suction first, keeping direct sun off the wall while you work, shutting the room down through the set and ventilating afterwards makes far more difference than anything you do with a bucket. Adding extra water to buy yourself time only weakens the finish you are trying to save.

What we offer
✅ Internal plastering and skimming to all backgrounds
✅ Dry lining, metal partitions and lay in grid ceilings
✅ Lime plasters and hair renders for period and listed buildings
✅ Ornate mouldings run and repaired in our Brighton workshop
✅ Screeds and specialist finishes

Over 20 years of this as a family run business covering Brighton, Sussex, the South East and London. Got work booked in while the weather holds? Call us on 01273 686 368 or email [email protected] and we will arrange a site visit.

40 tradesmen. Over 20 years in the trade. Still run like the family business we have always been.

That combination matters more than it sounds. Enough people on the books to take on full developments, commercial fit-outs, and intricate one-off detail, but run closely enough that the standard does not slip when the job gets big or the deadline gets tight. Our key team in Brighton have close to 100 years of experience between them.

The part people forget: a render or plaster finish is only as good as the people applying it. The right product on the wall means nothing if the prep is skipped or the crew changes halfway through. We keep our own trained teams on site, start to end.

Why clients stay with us:
✅ 40 tradesmen covering Brighton, Sussex, the South East and London
✅ NVQ qualified operatives and our own moulding workshop
✅ Approved applicators for K-Rend and Weber EWI systems
✅ Internal plastering, external render, EWI, screeding and mouldings under one roof
✅ Residential, commercial and heritage, no job too small

We hold the 2025 INCA accreditation and took first place at the INCA Awards in 2023, on top of British Gypsum's "Smoothy of the Year" award for work featured on Channel 4's Grand Designs. 98% of homes with external wall insulation fitted under a government scheme have problems serious enough to need fixing. That's the finding from a National Audit Office report published in October 2025. Doesn't matter if yours went in through ECO4, the Great British Insulation Scheme, or a private installer; we've seen dodgy render jobs from all three.

Watch out for cracking render, damp patches on internal walls after rain, a hollow sound when you tap the wall, and heavy moss or algae growth. One of those on its own probably isn't much to worry about. A few together, worth getting someone to check.

We're on the Krend and Weber-approved applicators list for external wall insulation and a member of INCA, the trade association for the industry. We've been doing this for over 20 years, so we know a failing system when we see one.

A full breakdown of what to check and what to do next is on our blog. Or skip that and just call us on 01273 686 368.

Old walls need to breathe. Modern plaster can stop them.

Solid wall buildings, the older ones without a cavity, rely on moisture moving in and out through the surface. Seal them up with a hard cement or gypsum finish and that moisture gets trapped, which shows up later as damp patches, salts pushing through and plaster blowing off the wall. Lime works differently. It's vapour permeable, so the wall can let moisture go, and it flexes with the building rather than cracking against it. It's how these places were finished for centuries, and on period and listed work it's almost always the right call.

Here's the thing people miss though. Lime isn't a like for like swap for gypsum. It goes on in coats, needs time to cure between them and can't be rushed, so the finish is only as good as the hands applying it.

Lime and period work is only part of what we do. On the plastering side we cover traditional float and set, lime plasters and hair renders for refurbishment work, repairs and matching of damaged period mouldings from our own workshop, through to metal framework ceilings and full commercial fit outs. Residential, commercial or heritage, we take it all on.

We've been plastering across Brighton, Sussex, the South East and London for over 20 years, with our own moulding workshop for period detail and a British Gypsum Smoothy of the Year award to our name.

Painted a rendered wall lately? You might never need to again.

Through coloured render has the colour running all the way through, so there is no painted layer sitting on top to flake, peel or fade. A chip or a scuff is the same colour underneath, and instead of repainting every few years, you simply give it a wash. Pair it with a silicone top coat and a Kpro treatment and the surface stays breathable and far slower to pick up dirt and algae.

The part people forget: the system has to match the building and how exposed it is. We have rendered a five-storey conversion in Brighton in a full marine climate and timber-framed flats on the exposed Peacehaven coast, and each one needs the right board, base coat and finish to last. Get that wrong, and even the best product will not perform.

What we offer:
✅ Through coloured and silicone thin-coat render
✅ Monocouche one-coat scratch render
✅ Approved applicators for K-Rend, Weber, Parex, Licata and Greutol
✅ All aspects of external wall insulation (EWI)
✅ Sprayed or hand applied, colour matched across phases on larger jobs

A cast concrete staircase, curved, with a bead that isn't designed to bend. That was the brief.

A client had a large staircase cast in concrete and wanted to keep the curve, which is lovely to look at and a real challenge to plaster. A three-coat system on a sweeping curve, finished with a PVC bead that, by design, runs straight.

Here's the catch with curves. There's nowhere to hide. A wavy line or a patchy finish shows instantly on a feature like this, so it all comes down to the prep underneath. We started with a blue grit bonding coat to grip the bare concrete and gave it 24 hours to cure, then built the surface level enough to run the bead cleanly along the line of the upstand, coaxing a straight detail around a curved stair.

The whole lot was then skimmed, ceiling included, for a seamless finish, all while keeping the freshly tiled treads spotless and holding a clean margin between the stairs and the wall.

The result is the sort of staircase people stop and look at when they walk in. Which was the point.

Cracked cornice? Crumbling ceiling rose? You don't have to lose it.

A lot of people assume a damaged period moulding has to be ripped out and replaced with something off the shelf. Not so. We visit the site, take a template of the original, and recreate it in our own workshop, so the detail that's been part of the building for generations carries on looking like it always has.

Fullers Plastering are manufacturers, suppliers and installers of fibrous plaster mouldings, contemporary and ornate, all handmade at our workshop using traditional methods. We produce plaster cornice, fire surrounds, columns and ceiling roses, and if you want to keep an existing design or match a new one, we run a full matching service.

What we work with:
✅ Traditional fibrous plaster and Glass Reinforced Gypsum (GRG) for interiors
✅ GRP and fibreglass for external cornices, window surrounds and string course details
✅ Bespoke one-off pieces, designed or replicated to suit the building
✅ Lengths of cornice run in situ or on site, whichever the job needs

Residential, commercial or heritage, our installers and casters can produce and fit any bespoke moulding to a high standard.

Hard enough to walk on in a day. Not ready to tile for weeks.

Here's what catches people out with screed: it feels solid within a day or two, but that tells you nothing about whether it's dry enough to tile or lay a floor over. A standard sand and cement screed dries at roughly 1mm a day for the first 50mm, then slower, so a typical floor takes weeks and a thick one can take a couple of months. Lay tiles or boards too soon and the trapped moisture has nowhere to go: tiles lift, grout salts up, timber cups. It's one of the most common reasons floors fail.

Liquid screed gets sold as the quick option, but it dries at a similar rate, so it pays to check rather than assume. We don't judge it by eye or rush the programme. We lay the screed correctly and tell you straight how long it needs before the floor goes on, so your tiler turns up to a floor that's ready.

What we lay:
✅ Standard sand and cement screed, ready mix or site mix
✅ Flowing screed, as approved flowscreed subcontractors
✅ Ardurapid and other quick drying or high strength finishes for tight programmes
✅ Domestic and commercial floors

Over 20 years in the trade, covering Brighton, the South East and London.

Got a floor going in this summer? Don't let the tiling get rushed before the screed is ready. We've put the full timings, screed by screed, in our latest guide. Read it via the link below, or call us on 01273 686 368.
