Found hidden away in a loft during a recent job: this badly burned-out, completely unnecessary isolator switch! 🔥⚠️

Situations like this are a stark reminder of why hidden electrical connections need regular checks. This redundant unit was failing under the surface and posed a serious fire hazard up in the roof space.

To make things safe, I completely removed the hazardous isolator and bypassed it using a secure maintenance-free junction enclosure to safely terminate and protect the continuous cables. Everything is now neat, sound, and properly secured.

When was the last time you checked your smoke alarms? Many homeowners assume that once an alarm is wired in or mounted on the ceiling, it’s good to go indefinitely. Unfortunately, that isn't the case!

Here are a few essential things to keep in mind:

The 10-Year Rule: Smoke alarms have a limited lifespan. Over time, dust, environmental factors, and internal sensor degradation mean they become less reliable. All smoke alarms—including mains-powered units—should be replaced every 10 years.

Check the Date: Take a quick look at the manufacture or expiry date printed on the back or side of the unit. If it's past a decade old (or doesn't have a date at all), it's time for a replacement.

Test Regularly: Press the test button monthly to make sure the unit and power supply are fully operational.

Tidy upgrade on this job today! We chased the existing surface-mounted socket into the wall for a much sleeker, flush-mounted finish, complete with a modern brushed metal faceplate.

One of the most important parts of a TV installation is making sure the wall can actually handle the weight—especially if you're dealing with drywall or stud walls. Simply screwing a bracket directly into plasterboard isn't always safe, especially with full-motion mounts that put extra leverage on the fixings.

That’s why I take extra care to reinforce the mounting area when needed. As you can see in the photos, using a sturdy timber backing plate is a game-changer. It provides a rock-solid foundation, ensuring the bracket is secure, level, and won't pull away from the wall over time.
