3 signs your multipoint door lock is about to fail completely
If your front or back door has a handle you lift to lock it, you've got a multipoint mechanism like the one in this photo. These are reliable for years - until they're not, and when they go, they often go without warning. A few signs to watch for:
1. The handle feels heavier or stiffer to lift than it used to
This usually means the internal gearbox is wearing down. It'll keep getting stiffer until one day it won't engage at all.
2. One or more of the locking points doesn't seem to be catching
Multipoint locks have several points along the door (top, middle, bottom) that all need to engage together. If the door feels like it's only locking in one spot, the mechanism is likely failing, not just misaligned.
3. The key turns but the door still feels loose when locked
This can mean a worn cylinder or a gearbox that's no longer pulling the bolts fully home - either way, it's a security issue, not just an annoyance.
Catch any of these early and it's often just the door itself that needs adjusting, not the mechanism - if the gearbox isn't damaged yet, a simple realignment can sort it out, no parts needed.
Leave it too long, though, and the risk isn't just a bigger repair bill. Sometimes the mechanism seizes completely with the door locked, and there's no way to release it from either side - meaning the door has to be forced or the lock drilled out just to get back in. That's a much worse day than booking a check-up now.
