Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, chimney sweeping was grueling, dangerous work. Sweeps—many of whom were young boys—rarely caught a break. However, they were granted one precious day off each year: May 1st.

Instead of resting, they hit the streets! Sweeps would join in the May Day festivities, dancing, singing, and celebrating with their communities. Over time, the tradition stuck, and May 1st became officially known as Chimney Sweeps Day.
