You’ve just moved into a new home and there’s already an alarm fitted. Handy – but who else knows the code?

An inherited alarm can be perfectly usable, but it is worth finding out exactly what you have before relying on it. Previous owners, tenants, cleaners or tradespeople may have known the code, while the service history and condition of the system may be unclear.

If their building access is still active, they may still be able to enter after they have left. The same applies to contractors, temporary staff and anyone whose access should only have been short-term.

A good access-control setup should make it easy to remove permissions, change who can enter particular areas and keep out-of-hours access under control without having to replace locks every time somebody leaves.

It is one of those jobs that is easy to overlook until you realise an old fob or code still works.

Parcel theft is easy to think of as a Christmas problem, but Dorset Police figures show it is a year-round issue.

In the 12 months from 1 August 2024 to 31 July 2025, there were 428 reported parcel thefts in Dorset. Of those, 259 happened between 9.01am and 5pm – around six in ten.

That makes sense when you think about it. A parcel left on a doorstep or in a communal entrance can be vulnerable while people are at work, on the school run or simply out for a few hours.

Using a trusted neighbour, secure safe place or collection point can all help. Video doorbells and CCTV can also give you a clearer view of what is happening around your entrance.

A camera may be recording continuously, but that does not guarantee that the footage will be clear enough to identify a person, read a vehicle registration or show exactly what happened.

Lenses become dirty, trees grow into view and lighting conditions change across the seasons. Glare, poor angles and incorrect timestamps can also reduce the value of footage when it is needed.

It is worth checking the live view during the day and after dark. Look at whether faces are clear, whether important entrances remain visible and whether the system is retaining footage for long enough. You should also know how to retrieve and export a recording rather than discovering this for the first time after an incident.

It is worth checking every entrance with the same level of care. Look at the quality of the lock, the condition of the frame and whether the door can be approached without being seen. Do not forget internal doors between a garage and the house, as these can sometimes be treated as less important despite leading directly into the property.

A strong front door is useful, but it cannot compensate for a weaker route elsewhere.

Leaving a light on when you go away has long been one of the most familiar pieces of home-security advice.

The problem is that a single lamp burning in the same room from dusk until dawn can look just as unnatural as a house left completely dark.

A lived-in home usually changes throughout the evening. Different rooms are used, lights come on and go off, and curtains or blinds move as part of an ordinary routine. That is much harder to imitate with one permanent light.

Simple timer switches can help create a more convincing pattern, particularly when they are used in more than one room and set to reflect the way the home is normally occupied.

Lighting is only one part of securing an empty property, but it works best when it looks natural rather than staged.
