What can somebody reach from outside your property?

Wheelie bins, ladders, garden furniture and other everyday items can sometimes make access easier than you realise, particularly near flat roofs, windows or side entrances.

Dorset Police advises keeping bins stored away where they cannot be climbed on to gain access to a building.

It is worth taking five minutes to look around the outside of the property with that in mind.

Could anything be moved and used as a step? Is there an easy route to a first-floor window? Has something ended up beside a wall simply because that is where it has always lived?

Small changes can remove an easy opportunity.

Before that happens, it is worth checking what your CCTV actually sees at night.

A camera can look perfectly positioned in daylight but produce a very different picture after dark.

Check for glare from outside lights, dark areas, overgrown plants, dirty lenses and whether faces are actually clear enough to recognise.

If you have not looked at your nighttime footage for a while, this is a good week to do it.

You do not necessarily need to rip it out and start again.

An existing system may simply need servicing, new user codes, reprogramming or an upgrade to bring it up to date.

It is also worth finding out exactly what is protected, whether every detector is still working and whether previous users still have codes or access they no longer need.

While overall theft did not show a significant year-on-year change, “other household theft” rose by 21% to around 791,000 incidents, driven by an increase in theft from outside homes.

That means it is worth looking beyond doors and windows.

Bikes, tools, garden equipment and other belongings outside the house can all be tempting targets.

Garages often contain some of the most expensive things outside the house – bikes, motorcycles, tools, garden equipment and sports kit.

But they are also often treated as completely separate from the home security system.

As the evenings draw in, the view into your home changes too.

With lights on inside and darkness outside, rooms can be much easier to see from the street or garden. That means laptops, handbags, keys, bikes and other valuables can suddenly be more visible than they were during summer evenings.

A useful autumn habit is to look at the house from outside after dark. What can you see through the windows? Are there rooms where valuables sit in clear view? Would closing a blind or moving something a metre make the difference?

Security is not always about adding equipment. Sometimes it is simply about noticing what the property is showing to the outside world.

Your CCTV can look fine at 2pm and be almost useless at 10pm.

As the evenings get darker, it is worth checking what the cameras actually show after dark. Streetlights, porch lights and reflections can change the picture completely, while shrubs, cobwebs or a badly placed light can create glare or block the view.

Pick an ordinary evening and look at the live image. Can you recognise someone approaching the door? Is the driveway clear? Are there dark areas where detail disappears?

A daytime check tells you whether the camera is working. An evening check tells you whether the picture is useful when you may need it most.

If you are away overnight, what makes the house look empty?

It is rarely one dramatic thing. Curtains that never move, post building up, bins left out, no lights at the usual times and a driveway that suddenly stays empty can all add to the picture.

You do not need to stage-manage the house. A trusted neighbour, sensible lighting timers and making sure deliveries are not left sitting outside can all help keep normality around the property.

If you use an alarm, check it before you go rather than when you are already halfway down the road. The same applies to cameras and video doorbells: make sure notifications are working and somebody knows what to do if there is a problem.

Side gates and paths are easy to forget about until the evenings get darker.

Dorset Police advises keeping the area around a property visible rather than giving someone somewhere to approach unseen. That is worth thinking about along side passages, rear gates and alleyways as autumn settles in.

Take a look after dark. Does the gate close properly? Is the path lit well enough to see who is there? Have shrubs or bins created a blind spot? Can somebody reach the back garden without being noticed from the house or street?

You do not need to floodlight the neighbourhood. The aim is simply to remove easy cover and make movement around the property more visible.
