🔎 One Damp Problem... Multiple Causes... One Complete Solution.

Pauline contacted us after noticing serious signs of damp affecting the ground floor of her home in Poole.

Our initial survey revealed more than just damp walls. As we investigated further, we uncovered wet and mould-contaminated flooring, deteriorated timber and moisture issues that needed addressing both inside and outside the property.

Rather than simply treating the visible symptoms, we looked at the property as a whole.

Our remedial works included:

✔ Thorough investigation and diagnosis
✔ Replacement of decayed timber flooring
✔ Installation of a new damp-proof membrane
✔ New insulation between the floor joists
✔ New structural plywood flooring
✔ High-performance underlay and new flooring
✔ Installation of an ACO drainage channel externally to reduce moisture against the building

🏠 Recent Damp Proofing Project – Bournemouth

This property was suffering from rising damp affecting multiple ground floor walls throughout the home.

Rather than jumping straight into a solution, we started with a thorough investigation and process of elimination to rule out other possible causes, including condensation, external bridging, leaks and penetrating moisture.

Once we were satisfied we were dealing with genuine rising damp, we carefully carried out the remedial works:

✔ Removal of contaminated plaster
✔ Installation of a damp-proof barrier system
✔ Specialist waterproofing treatment
✔ Reinstatement using breathable materials
✔ Careful lifting and reinstatement of flooring where required

One thing we're seeing more and more is walls being covered with plastic membrane systems without properly understanding why the wall is wet in the first place.

In our experience, understanding the cause of the moisture is just as important as the treatment itself. Simply hiding damp behind a membrane doesn't always solve the underlying issue.

High external ground levels are a very common cause of penetrating damp.

When soil, paving, or render sits too high against a property, it allows moisture to bridge into the wall and transfer straight through to the internal surfaces.

Over time this can lead to:

• Damp patches internally
• Blown or salt-contaminated plaster
• Mould forming at low level
• Cold, moisture-laden walls

Reducing ground levels and managing water away from the building is essential to prevent moisture entering the structure.

We were recently called to a property where thermal imaging showed very cold readings along the top of the skirting boards.

On further investigation, the issue wasn’t the walls at all — the subfloor was extremely damp and poorly ventilated.

When a subfloor is damp and unvented it can lead to:

• Cold floors and cold walls
• Condensation forming internally
• Mould developing around skirtings
• Damp air rising into the living space
• Deterioration of floor timbers over time

We installed ventilation to improve airflow, allowed the area to dry, and then put everything back properly.

Water must be managed away from the property, not allowed to sit against it.

Here we’ve installed ACO / French drains to direct water away from the building and reduce pressure on the external walls.

When water is allowed to build up against a property, it can lead to water ingress, penetrating damp, and even rising damp.

Correct water management is a key part of long-term damp prevention.

This wall has previously been treated, but no salt inhibitor was applied.

Because of this, salts are still migrating through the wall and appearing on the surface.

Even when a wall feels dry, hygroscopic salts can continue to attract moisture, leading to staining, blistering paint, and failure of finishes.

If salts aren’t dealt with correctly during treatment, they will keep coming back.

Chimneys are often naturally damp spaces and one of the most common hidden routes for water ingress.
Cracked or failing flaunching, uncapped chimneys, and damaged brickwork all allow rainwater to enter and track down internally.
Chimneys that have been taken down internally but not properly vented can also trap moisture, leading to penetrating damp and staining on surrounding walls.
Old chimney soot is hygroscopic — it stays damp and draws moisture and salts through to internal finishes, even long after the fireplace has been removed.
If you're noticing staining, damp patches, or suspect water may be entering via a chimney, get expert advice early before the problem worsens.
