This weekend the clocks go back, and for several months the homes we design will be experienced differently... more hours in artificial light, more evenings spent indoors looking out.

It is a reminder of why lighting, both natural and artificial, is never an afterthought in our process. How a room is lit shapes how it is used through every season, not just the brightest months.

Some of our favourite moments in a scheme only reveal themselves after dark.

Everything we design is not designed once. It's designed for the day and then again at night so the space flows 24 hours a day. That light to dark flow is key to the space.

Some of the most important decisions in a project happen at the material level.

At Hop Kiln, brick and flint sit alongside generous oak framing throughout the main living space... a material palette chosen to echo the vernacular of the surrounding landscape rather than impose on it.

This is the thinking behind every FlowerKittle project: materiality is never decorative. It is a response to site, light and longevity, chosen to age well and belong for decades to come.

Sustainability, for us, starts with a simple question: will this building still be worth keeping in fifty years?

That means prioritising the retention of existing fabric where it has value, specifying materials for how they age rather than how they look on day one, and designing structures that can adapt as a family's needs change.

A newlywed couple may not have the same priorities or needs once they become a family.

- How will the space need to change?
- What could it become?
- How will what we do now be affected in the future?

Can you think of anything else we need to consider for the future?

A successful project is about more than good design. It requires experience, and foresight of the process needed to deliver the completed scheme.

Mapping out the full design team from the outset is invaluable. Not every consultant is needed on day one, but understanding when and how each should be engaged is a vital part of the lead designer's role.

Continuity of the lead designer and core team members throughout the project, from RIBA Stage 0 through to Stage 7, is essential to a scheme reaching its full potential.

And that's where we hold our expertise.

This month, the Building Safety Levy came into effect across England... a new charge on major residential developments, introduced to help fund the remediation of defective buildings in the wake of Grenfell.

It is a technical change, but it reflects a wider shift the industry has been moving through for several years: greater scrutiny, clearer accountability, and higher expectations placed on anyone delivering new homes.

At FlowerKittle, navigating evolving regulation is simply part of leading a project properly. As a RIBA Chartered Practice, we stay close to changes like this so our clients can continue with their lives with little disruption... another reason a significant project benefits from a design team that understands process as well as design.

Lighting is rarely considered early enough in design. Too often it arrives at the end of a project as a fit-out decision rather than a design one.

At FlowerKittle Architects in Bournemouth, how a space is lit, both naturally and artificially, is part of the conversation from the earliest design stages. Light can be functional, it can be atmospheric, and in the right location it can become the focal point of a space in its own right.

Getting this right means understanding orientation, material response and the rhythm of a room before a single fitting is specified.

For those planning a significant project, light deserves consideration from the very first sketch.

A staircase is much more than a practical feature. At this new-build dwelling in Hampshire, it became a study in resolution.

Polished concrete treads meet a glass balustrade with fixings concealed beneath the surface, so the line of the stair reads uninterrupted from base to top. Glass is cut directly to the profile of each tread. The timber floor aligns precisely with the top tread, and lighting is recessed into the wall rather than added afterwards, washing each step without a single visible fitting.

None of this happens by accident. It is the result of decisions made early, tested through detailed technical design, and carried through to construction without compromise.

This is the level of resolution a significant residential project deserves.

Before a single drawing is produced, a design response is already taking shape.

It starts with reading the site: orientation, topography, existing vegetation, the character of neighbouring buildings. It continues with understanding the brief behind the brief, not just the rooms a client has asked for, but how they intend to live, entertain, work and grow into a home over time.

Massing, material choice and the relationship between old and new are all resolved through this thinking before concept design begins.

This is why FlowerKittle Architects don't work to a fixed house style. Each response is built from its context.

Are you considering a project where the site and brief deserve this level of thought?

What does it actually take to design a home that still works for a family in twenty years, not just on the day it's built?

Architectural projects should start with an ambition that goes beyond the brief itself: a home built to last, designed around how a family wants to live. That ambition is difficult to realise through drawings alone. A planning application or a set of technical drawings can satisfy a regulatory requirement without ever resolving how a building will feel to live in, or how its design intent survives contact with a contractor, a site constraint, or a changing brief.

Our studio works across the full RIBA Plan of Work, from the first sketch through to construction, coordinating consultants, safeguarding design intent through technical design and construction stages, and taking responsibility for how a project comes together, not just how it's drawn.

For the site at Arletts, the ambition was to replace a redundant bungalow, originally servants' quarters for the estate's main listed building, with a home that finally matched the character of its setting.

Left as it was, the bungalow did nothing for the landscape around it or the listed building it once served. A contemporary replacement in a curtilage listed setting, within a working woodland, brings its own risks: get the massing or materials wrong and you either fight the historic context or lose the site's ecology and tree cover in the process.

Our studio led the project through to planning, working within the constraints of the curtilage listing, protected species surveys and a mature woodland setting to coordinate around existing trees. The design uses large cantilevered roofs and glazing to keep the building's height low and bed it into the sloping site, partly built into the landscape so the form recedes rather than competes with the 18th-century listed building nearby.
